Tomato Festival: Do You Have the Ugliest Tomato in Needham?

If you think your tomato garden can do celebrity impressions, the farmers market may have an award for you.

This weekend, the Needham Farmers Market is bringing back the Tomato Festival. This Sunday, at the August 25 market, a number of vendors will be bringing heirloom and other tomatoes to the stalls--and they are inviting you to bring your own!

According to a press release from the market, there will be a number of contests for home-growers. Prizes for the "Ugliest," and "Best Dressed Tomato," as well as "Best Celebrity Look-Alike" contests. Winners will bring home a tomato.

This week's featured vendor is MacArthur Farm, whose tomatoes are award-winning. The owner, Peter MacArthur, competes in an annual produce competition at Boston's City Hall Plaza, and some of his tomatoes have won awards for taste and slicing, among others. These are the same tomatoes Peter sells at the Needham Farmers Market, the release goes on to say.

For the farmers market's musical guests, a band called Jam Sandwich, and the visiting non-profit at the Market is the Charles River Center.

Other vendors you can expect to find this week: Neighborhood Farm, Big Sky Bakery, Globe Fish, Lilac Hedge, Foxboro Cheese, Nella Pasta and Wheatless Bliss.

The Needham Farmers Market opens Sundays, from 1-5 p.m. on the front lawn of First Parish in Needham, according to an announcement Farmers Market spokesperson organizers.
