Rockets Review: Big Wins Close 2011

Boys hockey stuns Catholic Memorial, girls basketball wins holiday tourney and dance team to perform at NCAA Orange Bowl halftime.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Boys Hockey On Wednesday, Dec. 21, the eighth-ranked Needham High School boys ice hockey team, in their home-opener at Babson College, beat Wellesley 6-2 in front of a large and vocal crowd. The win moved the Rockets to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Bay State Conference and set them up for their match-up with top-5 Catholic Memorial on Dec. 28. Needham out-skated the visitors for much of the first two periods and saw one of Catholic Memorial’s top players ejected for a hit against the boards, but the team was not able to find the back of the net. The Knights broke the 0-0 tie in the third period and looked to be in great position to take the win, when Needham pulled their goalie with just over …

Rockets Review: Nov. 7-13

Football team is one win away from the postseason, boys soccer goes out in style and Duffy named IAFO Coach of the Year.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Although the Rockets boys soccer season ended on Friday, Nov. 11 at the hands of the No. 1 seed Greater New Bedford in the south section semifinals, the boys were as good as any other team in the area and showed it in the tournament. After taking down King Phillip at home in the first round 4-1, Needham then needed overtime to beat a very good Silver Lake team two days later, before once again going into overtime against Greater New Bedford—this time falling 3-2. Mac Steeves put the Rockets up 1-0 in the first half before the top seed scored one minute later to tie up the game. Steeves assisted on the next goal, a Nolan Brady score, before a penalty kick early in the second half allowed Greater …

Rockets Review: Needham Postseasons Underway

Girls soccer wins in OT shoot-out, girls swimming and diving places third at BSC championships.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Girls Soccer After getting the No. 20 seed in the MIAA Division I South Tournament, the Rockets earned a Saturday afternoon trip to take on Hingham High School, Nov. 6. After an even first 50 minutes of play that saw the visitors down 1-0, Needham was able to tie the game up 1-1. The Rockets found the back of the goal again later in the second half to go up 2-1 and seemed to have the game in hand with only seconds to play when a high loose ball in front of Needham's goal was tipped in just past the goalie. As difficult a situation as a young team can face, the girls stepped up and fought through two more scoreless 10 minute overtime periods to move the game into the shoot-out round.   Senior …

Rockets Review: Oct. 17-22

Girls volleyball takes two, golf in postseason and boys soccer and football keep rolling.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Volleyball After outplaying both Milton and Framingham, the Needham High School girls volleyball team was not able to hold on to either match, dropping both in five sets. The girls, however, playing much better volleyball, came back strong to beat Norwood on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 3-1, and then Weymouth on Friday, Oct. 21, 3-1.   With the victories, the team doubled its win total from last year and, with three games to play, has a chance to build on that number. On Monday, Oct. 24, the girls will host Braintree then will travel to Newton North on Wednesday, Oct. 26 for their last Bay State Conference contest, before hosting Senior Night against Mansfield on Halloween (Monday, Oct. 31) to finish off …
