What Are High Rock Students Reading This Summer?

A quick guide to required reading for incoming sixth graders.

Needham students entering sixth grade at High Rock School this fall are being asked to read two books from the school's summer reading list in the next few months. The list includes titles such as "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick, "The City of Ember" by Jeanne DuPrau, "The London Eye Mystery" by Siobhan Dowd and "Tangerine" by Edward Bloor. Students don't need to complete a formal written assignment about the books, but they need to come to school in September ready to participate in assignments and activities based on the books. Summer Reading Ideas for Needham Kids

Local educators offer a list of great books for elementary schoolers to read while school is out.

While summer reading is not required for Needham elementary school students, local educators recommend that parents encourage their children to continue reading over the summer. A great way to do this is to have the kids sign up for the Summer Reading Clubs at the Needham Free Public Library, where they can track their reading and even earn prizes for every few hours completed. Suggested titles range from picture books such as "The Little Red Pen" by Janet Stevens to beginning reader books such as the Fly Guy series or "I Want My Hat Back" by Jon Klassen to early chapter and young reader books such as the Big Nate, Dragonbreath, Ivy and Bean and Penderwicks series. What Are Pollard Students Reading This Summer?

A quick guide to required reading for students entering seventh and eighth grade in the fall.

School's out at the end of the day today, but that doesn't mean homework is at an end. Over the summer, Pollard Middle School students—those entering seventh and eighth grade in 2012-13—must read at least two books from an approved list of titles. Suggested titles include a few classics such as "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, "Call of the Wild" by Jack London, "Dracula" by Bram Stoker and "Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne, as well as modern favorites such as "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card, "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak and "The Hunger Games" trilogy by Suzanne Collins.
