PatchSnap: Wheelmen Take a Break

Telling Needham's stories one picture at a time.

Patch met up with a few members of the Charles River Wheelmen cycling club on Tuesday evening after they had finished a 22-mile ride and were enjoying coffee and conversation at the Starbucks on Highland Avenue. The riders—Rick Lawrence of Sudbury, John Mannix of Jamaica Plain and Fred Kresse of Needham—said the club meets a few times a week for rides of varying lengths around the area. On Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m., they gather at Nahanton Park just over the bridge in Newton for a fitness ride of anywhere between 19 and 50 miles. The ride is known in the area and is a longstanding tradition—going forward in rain, shine, sleet or snow every Saturday morning for the past decade or so, Kresse said. Admittedly, the wintertime rides don’t …

PatchSnap: Work to Begin on Highland Ave.

Telling Needham's stories one picture at a time.

Drivers heading through Needham on Highland Avenue may have noticed a few message boards flashing notices that roadwork was set to begin on July 11. Though as of early this week, the roadway was clear for traffic, the real work is set to begin on Thursday, July 14, so motorists should be aware of possible delays on the section of Highland Avenue between May and Rosemary streets, alongside Memorial Park. Below is an alert published on the town Web site:  The Department of Public Works will rehabilitate a section of roadway on Highland Avenue from May Street to 200 feet beyond Rosemary Street. The DPW has scheduled this roadway rehabilitation in order to minimize day time interruptions for businesses and commuter traffic. Daytime shoulder …

The free four-week program, funded in part by ParentTalk, is held on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Park. PatchSnap: Walnut St. Represents

Telling Needham's stories one picture at a time.

Several Needham neighborhoods were represented during Monday's Fourth of July parade—such as the residents of Laurel Drive, who proclaim to have the town's oldest longstanding annual block party (started in 1973). Among the 'hoods displaying their pride on Monday was the Walnut Street gang, who participated in the aerial photo for Needham's 300th birthday after the parade.  Have a great recent photo that captures a newsworthy moment, a perfect piece of Needham or just a little fun? PatchSnap: A Part of History

Telling Needham's stories one picture at a time.

Hundreds of Needham residents past and present gathered after Monday's Grand Parade to become a part of history. While everyone organized themselves into the letters and numbers in "NEEDHAM 300," a helicopter hovered over Memorial Field, carrying a photographer who was ready to capture the moment for posterity. Can you find yourself, friends and family in this shot, provided by the photographer, Topher Cox, courtesy of the Needham 300 Committee?

PatchSnap: Setting the Stage

Telling Needham's stories one picture at a time.

Members of the Needham 300 Committee and the Needham Exchange Club worked together Friday afternoon along with Department of Public Works employees to set the stage for the evening's Red, White and Blue Concert and family picnic. Starting at 5:30 p.m., families are invited to bring their dinner to Memorial Park where tables will be set up for outdoor dining. Then at 6:30 p.m., the first performer—the Haverhill Sons of Italy Drum and Bugle Corps—will take the stage on Memorial Field. Everyone is encouraged to bring blankets or light beach chairs (nothing that will poke into the turf) to set up and enjoy the show, which also will include the Georgia Brass Band and Trooper Dan.

PatchSnap: Three Days Till the Big Reveal

Telling Needham's stories one picture at a time.

Like many other groups and neighborhoods around town, the Needham 300 Committee is busy this week putting the finishing touches on their float for the 2011 Fourth of July parade. On Wednesday, members of the group gathered at a local home to continue their efforts in creating what they say will be one of their biggest and best floats ever. Not one to give away the surprise, Patch stopped by and snapped this picture of just a small part of their creation. Want to see the whole thing? Be sure to watch the Grand Parade on Monday, July 4 beginning around 9:05 a.m.

PatchSnap: Church Helps Launch Youth Program

Telling Needham's stories one picture at a time.

With a little help from the outreach committee of The Congregational Church of Needham, Needham Youth Services is launching a new program called VIP—Valuable Interactions among Peers. The VIP program matches high school students (Big VIPs) with children in elementary school (Little VIPs) who may need some additional support in their lives. The Little VIPs and Big VIPs will spend quality one-on-one time together, interacting and playing in a safe place. The program's goal is to help build connections and ensure that all Needham youth gain confidence and self-esteem. To learn more about the VIP program or to sign up a Big or Little VIP, visit the Needham Youth Services Web site.
