Who's Your Favorite Needham Teacher?

In honor of National Teacher Day, we ask you to share your stories of gratitude, and let us know who the best teacher in Wellesley is.

Tuesday, May 7, is National Teacher Day, according to the National Education Association. Teachers have long been among the most unsung heroes of our time, affecting and shaping the brains of countless individuals without truly getting acknowledged for their remarkable influence. There are a number of ways to say 'Thanks' to a Needham teacher, and we want to hear why you are grateful. By the way, teachers, bring your teacher ID to any Chipotle and the meal's on them. The details are on the restaurant's Facebook page. In honor of today, we ask you to share your stories about your favorite teacher. Or, we ask that you shine the light on a remarkable teacher in town. Did an educator change your life? Say something to you, or teach you …

Say 'Thanks' to a Needham Teacher

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, and today is Teacher Appreciation Day.

Take the opportunity this week to honor a teacher in your life. May 6-12 is Teacher Appreciation Week and today, May 7 is Teacher Appreciation Day.  Needham Public Schools' policy on teachers' gifts are much in line with those by the state, up to $50 for an individual student. Teachers have to report anything worth more than $10.  If you are not comfortable giving them a gift, there are plenty of ways to let teachers know how much you appreciate what they do. A simple note or card is always welcome, or a handmade craft from a student.  Parents can also donate books to school libraries in honor of a favorite teacher or a donation can be made in a teacher's name to the Needham Education Foundation (NEF). To view the teacher gift policy (…

Needham Schools: Ready to Help Kids to Cope with Marathon Bombing Aftermath

Superintendent of Schools, in China last week, created stronger bond with Chinese hosts after discovering a Chinese graduate student was one of three bystanders killed.

This email went out Sunday night to parents of Needham students: Dear Needham Families: As we approach the beginning of a new week, let me take this opportunity to reassure you that we are prepared for a full day of classes tomorrow and will be able to provide the support some of our students may need to cope with last week's bombing at the Boston Marathon and its aftermath.  Please know that we will be ready to respond to any students who raise questions or who seem to be having any difficulties related to what occurred.  Parents who are concerned about their child or whose family has been affected by the tragedies should contact the school so that we can help your child.   The following document, entitled A National Tragedy: Helping …

Needham Schools Back In Session Wednesday

Students and staff will return to class two days after Hurricane Sandy blew through town.

Needham Public Schools are expected to open at their regular time on Wednesday, Oct. 31, two days after Hurricane Sandy caused serious power outages and other damage around town. District Superintendent Dan Gutekanst sent out the following e-mail on Tuesday evening: It is my expectation that the Needham Public Schools will open on time tomorrow, Wednesday, October 31st. This evening I attended a meeting with Town Manager Kate Fitzpatrick and Needham's public safety officials to review plans for continuing tree, power line, and debris clean up. Town, utility, and public safety officials are working very hard to restore power to isolated areas in Needham, and they are focused on having roads ready for the morning commute. •  All schools have…

Needham Public Schools Closed Tuesday

An announcement was posted on the town website early this morning.

[UPDATE Tuesday, 5:35 a.m.] Needham Public Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30, as town crews and local residents work to clean up after Hurricane Sandy. Superintendent Dan Gutekanst sent out this announcement in an email early Tuesday morning: As you may know by now, school has been canceled in Needham today, Tuesday, October 30th. I made the decision after driving around town early this morning and after consulting with public safety folks. While most of the town is safe and has power, there are isolated areas of no power, including one or two key intersections. In addition, downed lines on a couple of elementary school sidewalks and near High Rock and Pollard will make some, part, or all of those campuses inaccessible until …

Travis Roy To Speak at Needham Schools

The former Boston University hockey player will help kick off the district's 2012-13 disability awareness programs.

Former Boston University hockey player Travis Roy will speak at three Needham elementary schools this week, with his powerful message of believing in yourself and setting positive goals, regardless of the challenges you face. Roy achieved his own goal of winning a hockey scholarship to Boston University. But 11 seconds into his first collegiate game in 1995, a crash into the boards broke two vertebrae and severed his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed him from the neck down. With intensive physical rehabilitation, Roy completed his college degree; became an author, motivational speaker and activist; and launched a foundation to fund research on spinal cord injury and to help survivors. His appearance at Mitchell, Broadmeadow and Newman …
