Yesterday was the first day of spring, but it certainly didn't feel like it. Use this article as an outlet to share your thoughts about this past winter, even if it still feels like we are in the middle of it. This winter season brought cold temperatures, chilling winds, freezing rain and, of course, snow. We have seen a lot of snow this year, and some people enjoy it. They like everything that comes with the snow: making snowmen, sledding, snowball fights, snow days and the list goes on. However, it also comes with shoveling, digging your car out of a snowbank, driving in bad conditions, possibly losing power and so much more. A winter storm warning and a wind advisory is in effect for Needham.
Although initial forecasts predicted mostly rain for the west-of-Boston area, Needham residents woke up to snow falling, but not necessarily accumulating this morning. So, how much snow will Needham get? Forecasters have said this will be a prolonged storm that will last throughout the day Thursday and into Friday morning. When all is said and done, the Needham area can expect 3-6 inches, according to WHDH. In the WHDH Weather Blog, Meteorologist Jeremy Reiner says snow will be steady along and east of I-95. Areas west of I-95 will see more steady precipitation later today. By tonight, Reiner says everyone can expect "widespread-steady snow." Needham will see mostly rain with some possible rain/snow mix, forecasters say.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Middlesex County and the Needham area as a batch of rain and snow moves its way into southern New England tonight. After some rain Wednesday, the storm is expected to hit later tonight and last through Thursday into Friday. WHDH forecasters are predicting a rain/snow mix for west of Boston. According to snow total maps from this morning, some areas west of I-95 could get 3-5 inches of snow, depending on where the rain/snow line falls. Forecasters emphasized that this is not a blizzard, rather a prolonged storm that will last over the next day and a half. Here's the latest on how you need to prepare for Winter Storm Nemo in Needham.
Looks like Nemo is going to find us ... (Come on, you knew we couldn't get through this storm without at least a few Pixar references). As the day of Winter Storm Nemo's arrival draws closer, the forecasts aren't getting any less hairy. Looking at a couple of accumulation maps reveals that 16 inches for the Needham area appears to be the bare minimum. Eighteen inches minimum actually shows up on more maps, and the maximum numbers are at two feet or more. Fox 25 meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz told Patch via a tweet that he'd recommend people head home by 3 p.m. Friday ("to be safe"), especially if they plan to use the T. UPDATED: 4:38 P.M. The Blizzard of '78 was 35 years ago. The Blizzard of '13 may be two days away. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard watch for Needham and surrounding areas from Friday night through Saturday morning. According to the watch, "The worst of the storm will be Friday night into Saturday morning," with snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour possible. "Travel may become nearly impossible with blowing and drifting snow." Forecasters are warning the timing of an approaching snowstorm may make Monday afternoon and evening commute slippery.
There may be an inch of snow on the ground on Monday evening during the evening commute, according to forecasters at WHDH-TV. "Don't expect a ton of snow, but a general 1-3" falls late Monday afternoon, through the evening, producing slick roads, perhaps in time for the ride home from work," writes meterologist Chris Lambert in his blog. Even though not much snow will fall, Lambert said that the snow "will create slick spots on the roads Monday evening and Monday night." The National Weather Service forecasts the snow will fall mainly after 3 p.m. in the Needham area. The precipitation will change over to sleet later in the evening. Several inches of snow could fall in Eastern Massachusetts from the winter storm.
[UPDATE: Jan. 21, 4:42 p.m.] That snow is expected to begin as flurries early Monday evening and cause a bit of a headache come Tuesday morning's commute. The bulk of the snow is expected along the coasts, with the Cape and coastal New Hampshire predicted to receive 5 or more inches, according to the WHDH weather blog. The western suburbs fall in the area predicted to receive 2-3 inches, but Boston is on the border of the 2-3 and 3-5 inch lines. Most of the snow is expected to fall late tonight through Tuesday mid-day. Along with the snow, according to WHDH, will come arctic air that is expected to stick around throughout the coming week.
