Today is the national observance of the holiday.

Today is the national observance of Veterans Day, a federal holdiday set aside to honor those men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Needham held its Veterans Day ceremony on the official holiday, on Sunday, Nov. 11. Today, government offices and other places will be closed in observance of the holiday. Governor Says State Offices Will Reopen at 10 a.m.

Gov. Deval Patrick said Monday night that the MBTA will resume service on Tuesday and state offices will open at 10 a.m.

The Danvers branch of the state Registry of Motor Vehicles will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Gov. Deval Patrick said in a Monday evening update on Hurricane Sandy from the bunker at the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Framingham. On his Twitter account, Patrick said that all Class D drivers’ test on Tuesday had been cancelled. Patrick also said non-essential state employees should show up for work at 10 a.m. and he is leaving it up to individual school districts to determine whether they will be open on Tuesday. On Sunday night, Patrick urged all school districts to close on Monday and Danvers took his advice. Held on the first Monday in September, Labor Day is a federal holiday that celebrates the American labor movement and the "social and economic achievements of American workers," according to the U.S. Department of Labor website. Today is the 130th Labor Day to be celebrated in the United States, with the first holiday marked by the Central Labor Union on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, according to the USDL website. What's Closed on Memorial Day?

A look at which offices and other locations are taking a holiday today.

Memorial Day, recognized on the last Monday in May, is a day to remember the men and women who served their country as members of the United States military and have since died, whether in battle or after coming home. In Needham, there are several opportunities for residents to participate in the holiday, with ceremonies planned at veterans’ memorials throughout town starting at 6:50 a.m. with a Mass at St. Joseph’s and concluding around noon with a ceremony at Memorial Park. Town and state offices will not be open today because of the Massachusetts holiday.

Needham students aren’t the only ones who get to sleep in this morning, the first day of their April vacation. It’s also Patriots' Day, so many state, county and town employees have the day off as well, as Massachusetts commemorates the official start to the Revolutionary War (the opening battle of which began on April 19, 1775).
