Needham held its Veterans Day ceremony on the official holiday, on Sunday, Nov. 11. Today, government offices and other places will be closed in observance of the holiday. Held on the first Monday in September, Labor Day is a federal holiday that celebrates the American labor movement and the "social and economic achievements of American workers," according to the U.S. Department of Labor website. Today is the 130th Labor Day to be celebrated in the United States, with the first holiday marked by the Central Labor Union on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, according to the USDL website. What's Closed on Memorial Day?

A look at which offices and other locations are taking a holiday today.

Memorial Day, recognized on the last Monday in May, is a day to remember the men and women who served their country as members of the United States military and have since died, whether in battle or after coming home. In Needham, there are several opportunities for residents to participate in the holiday, with ceremonies planned at veterans’ memorials throughout town starting at 6:50 a.m. with a Mass at St. Joseph’s and concluding around noon with a ceremony at Memorial Park. What's Closed in Needham on MLK Day

State, town offices not open today in observance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today is a federal holiday observing the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (whose birthday fell this year on Sunday, Jan. 15). The town of Needham will hold a free community event honoring Dr. King beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Needham High School. All are invited to attend.
