The newcomer, David Ecsedy, netted 633 votes, which was not enough to unseat the three incumbent candidates, Joseph Barnes, Jr. Constance Barr and Marianne Cooley, each of whom had over a thousand votes apiece.  According …

Parenting: Voting with the Kids

Election Day is a great opportunity to teach your kids about the importance of the voting process.

I would love to rename Election Day "Freedom Day." I think more people would vote if they could remember or in some cases even know what it took and what we lost in order to secure our democracy. I guess you can tell by my tone that I have always been fascinated by politics. Yes, it can get ugly—especially in a presidential race—but cut through all of that nonsense and you get to the core of what Election Day is really about: our freedom to decide who runs our country. My gather was born in Germany and never ever took his right to vote in the United States for granted. He was incredibly proud to be an American citizen and passionate about his right to vote. We all learned at a very young age what a privilege it is to vote. I went to the …

I would also encourage you to educate your children about all the other offices that are on the ballot, as well as the other elections that occur during the year. When my children were young and I brought them to the polls, I also brought them when I voted in the Town Election in April and explained the importance of that election.   more ›

This free, online quiz takes a close look at where you stand on a range of issues, then compares your views to candidates' positions.

Election day is quickly approaching. We watch commercials, listen to speeches and watch the news—but do we really know what candidate best matches our  positions? A website launched earlier this year that claims their tool can match candidates to voters has quickly been gaining popularity through social media channels. The quiz covers everything from social issues to foreign policy and answers can be fine tuned. You can choose general or more detailed responses, and a scale allows you to set the level of importance for each issue. Your responses are then analyzed to determine your …

Can't Get To The Polls on April 10? Vote Absentee

Absentee ballots to vote in the 2012 Town Election must be turned in by April 9 at noon.

Don't let a busy schedule or upcoming trip keep you from the polls on Tuesday, April 10. Have your voice heard in the 2012 Town Election by registering for an absentee ballot if you will be unable to vote on election day. In a recent blog post, Needham resident Lollie Weeks—also known as "The Fortuitious Housewife"—wrote about her experience of filling out an absentee ballot, with kids in tow, and recommended that busy parents consider voting early. Weeks called the process "really simple" and said her two sons enjoyed being part of the activity. "The boys loved helping Mom vote, and the lollipops the nice lady gave them for being such good helpers was a super bonus," she wrote in her blog. "[...] don't be afraid to drag the kids along …
