What's Going on in Needham: Menorah Contest, Pie Fundraiser and Tennis Lessons

Here are just a few of the announcements Needham readers shared this week on Patch: • Design contest—The Chabad Jewish Center and Parametric Technology Corporation are encouraging local residents to design a virtual menorah. The winning design will be lit on the Needham Town Common during Chanukah, and the designer will receive an iPad or $500 cash. • Buy a pie—The Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage office in Needham is selling Thanksgiving pies to benefit the clients of Community Servings for the annual “Pie in the Sky” fundraiser.  • Big game—Watch the Needham High School varsity girls field hockey team play their final Carey Division game on Oct. 23 at DeFazio Field. • Tennis lessons—Sign up for adult tennis lessons at the Needham …

Pet of the Week: Fluffy & Puffy

Brother and sister cats are devoted to each other and looking for a good home together.

  Submitted by Judy Ambrose, Neponset Valley Humane Society Fluffy and Puffy would love a home where they can stay together forever. This adorable, very friendly brother-sister duo are devoted to each other. Both cats are super friendly and affectionate. They love to be in your lap or curl themselves around your neck in hope of getting some attention. They are both very sweet and gentle cats. They are just under one year old. They are currently in a foster home with other cats and a cat-friendly dog and they get along fine. Fluffy and Puffy are still really kittens and they love to run and play. These two precious kitties were found in an abandoned building. They are so happy to be in a foster home where they are safe and loved. Call …

Community Council Ready for Big Move [VIDEO]

Hillside Avenue building will offer more space, handicap accessibility.

With the final renovations underway, the Needham Community Council will soon be moving into its new home at 570 Hillside Ave. where there will be more space for meetings and programs, commercial refrigerators to store food pantry items and easier accessibility for all residents. The council has been housed in a building at 51 Lincoln St. for 40 years, renting it for years before purchasing it from the Visiting Nurses Association in the 1980s. “It was a good home for many, many years,” said Sandra Robinson, executive director. “But we outgrew this space and in the last 10 years we’ve been thinking really hard about what to do next.” Creating a space The decision to move was finalized about two years ago. Don't wait until the holidays to show your giving spirit—there are plenty of opportunities for charity and community support throughout the year.

The holiday season tends to bring out the best in people, as we find that extra dollar in our pocket to drop into the Salvation Army bucket, pull together a bag of gently worn clothing to give to a local shelter, buy Christmas gifts for a family in need or help out in other ways. But you don’t have to wait for December to give back. Needham has many organizations that offer support for children, families, seniors and others year-round, and they can always use more help.
