Four Needham Channel volunteers received awards at the Volunteer Appreciation Party.
Every year, the Needham Channel takes some time to thank members of their team for service. This year, the four honorees are Mike Riley, Colleen Lavery, John Milligan and Jonathan Tamkin. Needham Channel Executive Director Marc Mandel explained in a press release that, “The people chosen to receive the Founders’ Award reflect what the Needham Channel is all about. Each of them have significantly shaped either what we do or how we do it. I can’t imagine what our studio would be like with out them.” Starting on Feb 7, The Needham Channel will air "Empowering Teens," an episode of District Attorney Michael Morrissey's program "Making Decisions" filmed with three Needham teens last week. The documentary film, “Big Little Town: The Story of Needham,” will premiere on WGBH this week. Originally screened at a special event held in Needham's James Hugh Powers Hall, the film—a joint presentation of Needham 300, the Needham Historical Society and The Needham Channel—will be broadcast on Thursday, July 19 at 10 p.m. The film will air again from July 20-22 (see the full schedule below). A description of the film provided by the Historical Society states: Before there was a United States, there was a Needham. First a part of Dedham in 1630, Needham was established as an independent town in 1711. Over the next 300 years, this small town transformed itself from a sleepy farming village, to a thriving mill center, to an ethnic melting…

The Needham Channel recently aired a follow-up report on the investigation into the death of an infant girl, named "Fredericka Mary," whose body was discovered at Claxton Field more than 25 years ago.
A new video posted this week on The Needham Channel's YouTube page takes another look at a homicide case from 1986, in which the body of an infant girl was found in a trash barrel at Claxton Field in Needham. The video story, which first aired on local cable on Thursday, June 14, is a follow-up to an investigative report The Needham Channel produced in 2006, which looked into the unsolved homicide of an unidentified infant who was posthumously named "Fredericka Mary." According to The Needham Channel report by Joe McGinty, on Mother's Day, May 11, 1986, a man searching for recyclable bottles at Claxton Field came across the body of an infant, wrapped in a shopping bag from a local supermarket. The 4 pound 7 ounce infant was determined to …
