Patch Picks: 5 Vegetarian Thanksgiving Dishes

Food ideas for people whose Turkey Day involves no turkeys.

In less than one week, we'll be doing the Thanksgiving scramble: Running to the inlaws' house, hitting the store for some last minute cranberry sauce, or checking on the bird in the oven every five minutes. What some consider the best meal of the year, fit for kings and gluttons, is centered around meat. Not all of us, for varying reasons, choose to eat meat, though. What is one supposed to prepare for those who don't eat turkey on Turkey Day? The answer is easy, and the options are many. Whether you're cooking for a vegetarian guest, or are a vegetarian yourself, Patch helps you out this week with five tasty recipes for a vegan/vegetarian Thanksgiving. 1. Tofurky: Funny sounding name, seriously tasty substitute. What you need: 1 Tofurky …

Thanksgiving Recipes: How to Cook a Turkey

If you need a new recipe for your Thanksgiving turkey, give one of these non-traditional twists a try.

There are many ways to cook everyone’s favorite holiday bird. Each family has its own special technique for cooking a turkey, whether it's using an old family recipe, adding a secret ingredient or shopping at a certain store in town that helps make the turkey taste all the better. You can pick up the turkey itself from Owen's Poultry Farm, Sudbury Farms, Roche Bros., or Trader Joe's. Many of these places may also offer a pre-cooked option. However, if you want to bake it yourself, we have a few recipes. If you're hosting Thanksgiving this year, you can try any of the recipes below to add a new kick to your feast. If you're attending someone else’s dinner, hopefully their turkey will taste as good as one of these! Just the name of this …

Raising Needham

Raising Needham: Thanksgiving Has Gone to the Kids

This Thanksgiving, I have decided to let the kids rule and sit back and enjoy the ride.

I am hosting Thanksgiving this year and couldn’t be happier about it. Mainly because I get to see my family, but also because we don’t have to endure the busiest travel day of the year via planes, trains and automobiles. I will be sure to remember that when my brothers show up with their families looking tired and defeated. The prospect of my sister-in-law's delicious cooking and a few rounds of ping-pong (family tradition) will surly cure what ails them. But I think the best part about this Thanksgiving will be my “let the kids take over” mentality. I feel like my kids are finally old enough, along with their cousins, to really get involved. I started right after Halloween with a great Magic Tree House Fact Tracker book simply called …

Traveling for Thanksgiving? Tips for Families

Whether by plane, train or automobile, traveling this time of year can be stressful. Here are some tips to make your trip easier.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel time of the year. Whether by plane, train or automobile, traveling can be stressful. Here are some tips to make your trip easier.  Hitting the road? Try these tips: Load up the iPod: Download your kids’ favorite songs and have a sing-a-long as you drive along the road. Plan to make stops: Before you hit the road, map it out and see what interesting sights are along the way. Why not stop and take a picture in front of the World’s Largest Ball of Twine? Or check out the great view of the mountains? This will break up the trip and let the kids have a chance to get up and run around for a little bit. Play some games: I-Spy is a roadtrip classic, other ideas like Car Bingo, scavenger hunts or making …

Hey, Needham: Let's Take the 'Thankful' Challenge

Share the best things about our town in the comments section or on Needham Patch's Facebook page.

If you've spent much time on Facebook, you've probably seen a friend or family member participate in the Facebook "thankful" challenge—a fun project started by some Facebook user years ago where the person lists all the things they are grateful for during the course of a month—one each day.  With Thanksgiving coming up later this month, November is a perfect time for this kind of challenge, and we at Needham Patch thought it might be fun to recreate a similar project here.  So tell us, Needhamites: What are you thankful for in Needham? What service, business, location, park, person, group, neighborhood or other aspect of living locally do you value most? Throughout the month of November, add your favorite things about living in Needham to …

Letter: Needham Businesses Giving Thanks with Community Food Drive

This letter was submitted by a Needham town employee.

As the holidays fast approach, it’s always a good idea to take time out of our busy schedules and give thanks for what we have.  The Needham Merchants Association, the Needham Restaurant Association, and the Needham Business Association, as part of the Discover Needham Local First Campaign, are coordinating an effort to give thanks and give back to the community. They are sponsoring Needham Gives Thanks, a food drive—“20 Days of People Helping People in Needham”—from Nov. 1-20 to benefit the Needham Community Council. The council provides critical support to the less fortunate in our community.  So bring your donations of nonperishable items to participating independent locally owned businesses—just look for the Discover Needham Local …
