Needham Voters To See 'Citizens United' Questions

The issue will be back before residents on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Needham residents will have quite a few decisions to make on Nov. 6—from who should be the nation’s next president to whether wine and beer should be sold in town to the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Residents will also join more than 150 communities across Massachusetts in voting on a nonbinding question that, if approved, would direct legislators to overturn the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision through an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “It’s saying that we the people, who are voting on this, want Congress to pass a constitutional amendment that says that corporations do not have the same rights as human people and that the legislature should be able to pass laws regulating political spending and …

Letter: Kennedy Is Qualified for the Job

This letter was submitted by a Needham resident.

A recent letter to the editor in the Needham Patch provided information about candidates Joe Kennedy III and Sean Bielat that was fundamentally incorrect. The assertion that Sean Bielat is more qualified for the Congressional seat is shockingly misleading. Joe Kennedy III has dedicated himself, like many of his family members before him, to a career in public service and has experience with a variety of developmental models. In Joe’s early professional career, and subsequent to his graduation from Stanford, he worked for the United Nations Development Program, with the Millenium Development Secretariat—a UN commission dedicated to eradicating poverty. Later, in 2004, Joe was accepted and served with distinction for over two years with the …

Letter: Kennedy Not 'Second Coming of Camelot'

This letter was submitted by a Needham resident.

It is mind boggling to see Joe Kennedy signs displayed on people's lawns. How can anyone justify voting for this ultra rookie? It is so arrogant of him to try to sell himself to the the public as a viable candidate to replace U.S. Rep. Barney Frank. He has absolutely NO experience. The only thing he has going for him, is his name. Furthermore, how insulting to Barney Frank's legacy to say "newbie" Kennedy is a fit replacement. Like Barney Frank or not, no one can deny the impact of his long career. The reign of the Kennedys is over. Sean Bielat is the right guy for this job. There is no comparison between Sean Bielat's qualifications and "wet behind the ears" Kennedy, who is a multi-millionaire, which he inherited from his family. Sean …

Letter: Needham Family Shares Reasons They Support Elizabeth Warren

This letter was submitted by a Needham resident.

Our family supports Elizabeth Warren for the U.S. Senate. And here are some of the reasons why. We admire how she took action on the unexpected findings of her research on the causes of bankruptcy in American families, founding the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which has already begun to protect Americans from powerful credit card companies engaging in predatory business practices. Her support of women’s health issues has been clear, strong, and reliable, not equivocated with qualifiers and maybes. We can depend on her to be a champion of women’s access to health care and to autonomy over their own bodies. We cannot imagine her agreeing to sign something like the Grover Norquist Pledge when all the possible options for dealing with…

U.S. Senate Debate: Candidates Wrangle over Character and Partisanship

Sen. Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren faced off in Lowell for round two of their debates.

With polls showing a neck-and-neck race for Massachusetts' U.S. Senate seat, Republican Sen. Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren came with claws sharpened to their second debate Monday night, Oct. 1 at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell. The debate, moderated by NBC's David Gregory, lasted about an hour. Even with its scattered punches and zings, the debate may not be a game changer. It was generally predictable and lacking much about specific national issues, and Gregory spent most of the time asking about character attacks. Cherokee Song Gregory started the debate with the glaring question about Warren's heritage. Warren claims to have Native American ancestry, but proof of that ancestry has not been presented. This has …

Medical Marijuana Debate Set Tuesday in Wayland

Needham residents are encouraged to come hear both sides of the issue, which will appear as Question 3 on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Needham residents who haven't decided where they stand on Question 3, which seeks to legalize medical marijuana, can hear both sides of the issue at an upcoming debate in Wayland. Needham health officials have spoken out against allowing Massachusetts residents to obtain and even grow marijuana for medical purposes, as proposed by the ballot question. But Needham Substance Abuse Prevention and Education Coordinator Carol Read also encouraged citizens to hear more about the topic to ensure they are fully educated before the Nov. 6 vote. The upcoming debate, "Marijuana Medicine or Public Health Hazard?," is part of the Walden Forum, presented in cooperation with WaylandCares and the Massachusetts Prevention Alliance, of which Read is vice …
