Needham High School girls soccer and golf both qualified for tournament play last week.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Girls soccer and the golf team were the first Needham High School teams to qualify for the postseason this fall as, between the two squads, they went 5-0 last week. Entering the week, the golf team was 6-2, with six matches left to play and needing one win to qualify for the state tournament (50 percent winning percentage qualifies a team). They not only got the win they needed but two more during a 3-0 week—beating Walpole, Braintree and Norwood. Girls soccer entered the week at 6-0-2, needing two wins to qualify (18 total games), and got both, beating Brookline and Milton to move to 8-0-2. By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Needham High School's fall sports programs continued to excel in a week that saw five teams stay undefeated and all teams move to at least .500 on the young season. Girls swimming and diving, girls soccer, boys and girls cross country and football all have yet to lose, while golf (two wins), girls volleyball (one win), boys soccer (one win) and field hockey (one win), each had strong weeks as well. The NHS cheerleaders and dance team were in action at the football team's 42-7 win over Braintree on Friday night, Sept. 21, with the dance team also being recognized for their 2012 State Championship at halftime. By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Needham High School girls volleyball started the week off with a non-league victory over Newton South and used the momentum to earn key league wins over Framingham and Natick (in 5 sets!). The girls now stand at 4-2 and have been ranked in the top-15 by the Boston Globe for the first time. The only match of the week will be on Thursday, Sept. 20 as the Rockets welcome in BSC Carey Division rival Weymouth. By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Volleyball After outplaying both Milton and Framingham, the Needham High School girls volleyball team was not able to hold on to either match, dropping both in five sets. The girls, however, playing much better volleyball, came back strong to beat Norwood on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 3-1, and then Weymouth on Friday, Oct. 21, 3-1. With the victories, the team doubled its win total from last year and, with three games to play, has a chance to build on that number. On Monday, Oct. 24, the girls will host Braintree then will travel to Newton North on Wednesday, Oct. 26 for their last Bay State Conference contest, before hosting Senior Night against Mansfield on Halloween (Monday, Oct. 31) to finish off …

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Tuesday, Sept. 20 saw the five Rockets varsity teams in action earn BSC victories. Field Hockey would have been the sixth victorious varsity team of the day, but as their Tuesday game in Natick was postponed because of weather, their win did not come until Wednesday. The Tuesday wins included girls swimming and diving over Dedham, boys and girls cross country over Braintree and Dedham and boys and girls soccer over Natick. Swimming and diving and the cross country teams easily took care of their opponents, while boys soccer soundly beat Natick (3-1). The boys team took on Wayland Monday.
Needham youths were in action on the soccer field Monday as the Needham U9 team took on Wayland in the 30th Memorial Day Classic Soccer Tournament. Needham would go on to win the game, 6-1, which took place at Keefe Field in Wayland. The Needham Bulls U9 boys team consists of Sean Greene, Kurt Brinkhaus, Josh May, Aidan McGaugh, Constantino Tsitsas, Roman Tacelli, Cole Nawrocki, Ryan Meade, Nate Ramras, Will Bandler and Hugh Curran. Matthew Greene serves as the team’s coach.
