Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. FedEx Giving Away Gift Cards for Small Business Saturday

$25 'Shop-Small' American Express Gift Cards will be given away to 40,000 people via Facebook.

For a second year, FedEx Corp. has committed to giving away $25 “Shop-Small American Express Gift Cards” through Facebook to 40,000. The Commercial Appeal reported that the promotion is to encourage consumers to support local, small independent businesses and is in honor of Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24. "America's small businesses are a unique and vibrant part of their local communities and a critical component to the broader health of our economy," T. Michael Glenn, executive vice president of Market Development at FedEx told the Commercial Appeal. By Devra Bailin, Town of Needham’s Economic Development Director This year’s Holiday Stroll and Blue Tree Lighting event, sponsored by the Needham Business Association on Saturday, Nov. 26, corresponds with the national Small Business Saturday event. The average consumer, according to the National Retail Federation, spends about $700 during the holiday season. By shifting 10 percent of those purchases from non-local businesses to independently owned private local businesses, we can have a profound impact on our local Needham economy because of the multiplier effect.
