Letter: Needham Businesses Giving Thanks with Community Food Drive

This letter was submitted by a Needham town employee.

As the holidays fast approach, it’s always a good idea to take time out of our busy schedules and give thanks for what we have.  The Needham Merchants Association, the Needham Restaurant Association, and the Needham Business Association, as part of the Discover Needham Local First Campaign, are coordinating an effort to give thanks and give back to the community. They are sponsoring Needham Gives Thanks, a food drive—“20 Days of People Helping People in Needham”—from Nov. 1-20 to benefit the Needham Community Council. The council provides critical support to the less fortunate in our community.  So bring your donations of nonperishable items to participating independent locally owned businesses—just look for the Discover Needham Local …

Adirondack Chair Project Hits the Streets

Unique pieces designed by local artists have been placed around Needham and will remain on display through the summer, to be auctioned off in September.

Updated on Wednesday, Aug. 1 with additional chairs and locations. They’re here! All over town, brightly painted Adirondack chairs are making their debut in front of Needham businesses. Each uniquely designed by a local artist, the chairs are part of the Needham Merchants Association’s efforts to bring more shoppers downtown. “Most of the chairs are in place—some in windows, some outside during the day and in at night to protect them,” Nancy Wright, owner of Perennial Designs and a member of the NMA, said Monday. With an original goal of making 20 chairs, the NMA’s “A Chair to Remember” project really caught on—with artists and local businesses and organizations teaming up to decorate and display more than 45 Adirondack chairs throughout …

Needham Businesses Launching 'Local First' Campaign

Local merchants groups are hoping to encourage residents to keep their dollars in town.

The Needham Business Association and the Needham Merchants Association are hoping to keep more of Needham's dollars in Needham with a new campaign that draws attention to the benefits of shopping locally. Residents and visitors to town should soon begin seeing the "Dicover Needham! Local First" logo in locally owned business windows. These businesses will also be giving out Discover Needham! Local First Cards for free, which will provide discounts to area shops when presented at the time of purchase. A fact sheet distributed by the Needham Business Association on Thursday, June 14 asserts that not only does shopping locally help Needham but that shopping non-locally—online or at "big box" stores—actually hurts the local economy. "…

The Benefits of Shopping Local This Holiday Season

Consumers encouraged to spend dollars in Needham on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 26.

By Devra Bailin, Town of Needham’s Economic Development Director This year’s Holiday Stroll and Blue Tree Lighting event, sponsored by the Needham Business Association on Saturday, Nov. 26, corresponds with the national Small Business Saturday event. The average consumer, according to the National Retail Federation, spends about $700 during the holiday season. By shifting 10 percent of those purchases from non-local businesses to independently owned private local businesses, we can have a profound impact on our local Needham economy because of the multiplier effect. Unlike a dollar spent at large chain stores or businesses outside Needham, half or more of each dollar spent at a local business stays in Needham. Spending even a small …
