Selectmen Appoint Fire Lieutenant, Open up About 9/11

While the world was still digesting the morning events of Sept. 11, 2001 that evening, the Needham Board of Selectmen decided to conduct their scheduled meeting, sending a message of hope and perseverance in the process. Current selectmen Jerry Wasserman and Dan Matthews sat in the Selectmen Meeting Room of Needham Town Hall on that fateful night. “For me,” Wasserman said at Tuesday night’s meeting, “the fact that we had a meeting that night was a demonstration of our town’s determination to move forward.” A look at the agenda for that night’s meeting shows that things certainly were business as usual. VIDEO: 9/11 Widow Makes Positive Impact After Husband's Death

Christie Coombs' husband, Jeff, graduated from Dedham High School.

Christie Coombs was devastated when she found out that her husband was among those killed on September 11, 2001. But instead of letting it ruin her life as well, Coombs decided to use the tragedy as a way to help others. Coombs has become involved with several organizations and helped organize various events while providing a voice for Massachusetts residents touched by the attacks. Coombs' efforts include organizing a 5K road race fund-raiser in her husband's name in mid-September, and a holiday party for servicemembers and their families. Her journey even allowed her to meet President Barack Obama at Ground Zero, the only Massachusetts widow invited to the event.
