On Monday, Boys Lacrosse traveled to State #1 and defending State Champion, Duxbury, to take on the mighty Dragons, a team that had not lost an in-State game in its last 48 tries. The Rockets got some pay-back for last spring's State Championship loss, and brought home a thrilling 6-4 upset win! Needham then beat top-15 Newton North and Dedham to complete a BSC sweep, finishing 11-0 in league and as the overall champion. Needham was able to get within 2 late in the game, but couldn't convert after Braintree made their free throws down the stretch and won 60-52. Rockets now need to win out in order to make the postseason. The Rockets play Newton North today.

Girls Basketball traveled to Weymouth on Tuesday and came away with a 50-38 win. While the win was the team's 5th in a row, and 8th in 11 games, it was also the team's 10th of the season, which is significant as it qualifies them for the postseason. Monday night's match-up at top-5 Braintree has been postponed to Wednesday, 2/20, so the Girls will wrap up their schedule at Newton North on Tuesday at 5:00pm (double-header with the Boys - 6:45pm), at Dedham on Thursday, and then at Braintree the following Wednesday. The MIAA Tournament will begin after February vacation. On Tuesday night, the Gymnastics Team wrapped up the BSC Carey Division Title as they took down the host Rebels of Walpole. On Tuesday, Wrestling beat Brookline on the road, before heading to North Andover on Saturday for a dual meet tournament. Coming out of the day 1-1, the team's final match will be held this Wednesday, as they host Wellesley on Senior Night at 7:00pm, before traveling to Quincy on Saturday, 2/9 for the DII Metro Sectional Tournament. Girls Basketball got two big wins on the week, beating Norwood on Tuesday and Framingham on Friday on Senior Night. With the two wins, the Team moves to 9-7 on the season, needing one more victory (in final 4 games) to qualify for the postseason. The girls will travel to Weymouth on Tuesday, before playing their last three games next week. Please note the Varsity, JV, and Freshman games scheduled to be …

The following was submitted by Needham High Athletics: Needing a win to to keep the possibilities of a trip to the postseason alive, the Boys Basketball waited until the final tick of the clock on Tuesday night to take down BSC Carey Division rival, and top-20 Brookline. Trailing 53-54 with just under 30 seconds left in the game, Needham set up a play for Senior Robbie McKittrick, who got an open look at a 3, but whose shot was just off. Senior Connor McLeod gathered the long rebound and tossed up what he thought would be the final shot of the game, which was just off target, however, Junior John Madsen found himself all alone under the basket for the rebound, and had just enough time to lay the ball in as time expired for the thrilling …

The Needham gymnasts moved to 4-0 on the season with their big BSC Carey win over Newton North on Friday. With the 133.25-131.10 win, the team finds itself with an outside chance to qualify for the State Team competition, while Senior Maria Smirnov and Junior Maggie Nieto turned in strong individual performances to help propel the Rockets. Boys Swim and Dive used two wins on the week to move to 4-3 on the season, with victories over Natick, 94-81, on Friday, and Newton North, 95-91, on Monday. While the Indoor Track Teams were not able to take down the mighty Tigers of Newton North in dual-meets on Thursday, they did test the perennial State power in both the Boys and Girls competitions. The following was sent by the Needham Wrestling Team: This past week saw NHS Wrestling drop a close one to Bay State League Rival and state powerhouse Framingham, 41-30 on Thursday, and then travel to the Woburn Invitational on Saturday where one Rocket took home Gold. At Framingham, the visiting Rockets took six of the fourteen bouts, earning four pins along the way: "Those guys (their opponents) weren't wrestling," said Associate Head Coach Nick Gamble. "That was their game plan-they knew they couldn't beat those guys and they just stalled by the edge of the mat to save pin points..." Below is Wrestling info from Head Coach Paul Ahern: The Needham High School Wrestling Team topped off a very successful week by taking the team title at the 16 team Belmont Invitational. The Rockets, who had beaten Bay State League Rival, Weymouth, 61-16 earlier in the week, placed 10 wrestlers at Belmont. Against Weymouth, The Rockets got pin points from Sophomore Dan Goldstein, Freshman Lucas Goldman, Senior Captains Mark Carroll and Mikhail Khibkin, Juniors Zach Goldman and Ben Glickman, and first-year varsity Seniors Aten Miles, Steve Cromp and Chris Ptak.
