The company is moving its resources down to Connecticut to assist a partner company with outages there.
The lights are back on for NSTAR customers across the state who lost power during and after Hurricane Sandy, NSTAR reports. "After a remarkable repair and restoration effort by all of our employees and contractors, we have returned every town in the NSTAR service territory back to normal operations," NSTAR spokesman Mike Durand said in an email Friday morning. As of 9 a.m., the company's online Outage Map showed 84 Needham residents without electricity, along with other outages in surrounding towns, but Durand said those issues are not related to the storm. "Please remember our online outage map is a real-time reporting tool and therefore includes outages not related to Hurricane Sandy," he said. NSTAR customers who are still without power…

More than 1,000 NSTAR customers in town were still without power as of Tuesday night.
Though crews throughout town worked Tuesday to clean up after Hurricane Sandy, more than 1,000 NSTAR customers in Needham were still without power as of 9 p.m. Among those without power for most of the day were several businesses along Highland Avenue near the Needham Heights Common—Starbucks, Café Fresh Bagel, CVS and Brookline Bank all were closed on Tuesday, and the traffic lights at West Street and Highland were out, with temporary stop signs set up to control traffic. Throughout the day, Needham residents posted on Facebook and Twitter about which areas were still without power, including businesses in the Crawford Street and Kearney Road area and homes on South Street at Livingston Circle and Elmwood Road. In many neighborhoods, …

NSTAR is working to restore electricity around the region following Hurricane Sandy.
More than 2,200 Needham residents remained without power at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning following Hurricane Sandy. About 18 percent of NSTAR's customer base in town are still experiencing outages after the storm brought down trees and limbs all over town, according to NSTAR's Outage Map. NSTAR's Outage Map does not go into detail about where outages are. Needham Public Schools closed for the day because there are still so many without power and there is still much cleanup to be done on local roadways. Residents are encouraged to report all weather-related issues to the town by calling 781-455-7550 and selection Option 2, then Option 1 to connect to the Department of Public Works administration. To report a power outage to NSTAR, call 800-…

Trees into houses, blown transformers and downed wires were among the calls local emergency crews responded to on Monday.
[UPDATE, Tuesday, 5:30 a.m.] The number of local homes without power as of early Tuesday morning was down to about 1,097, or 9 percent of the NSTAR customer base in Needham, according to the company's Outage Map. About 23 percent of NSTAR customers in Needham—about 2,814 households— were without power as of 9 p.m. Monday evening, as Hurricane Sandy continued to pound the region with strong winds and rain. That number had been steadily climbing since about 2 p.m., as tree limbs and, in some cases, entire trees, came down on homes and power lines around town—causing transformers to blow in several locations, according to Needham Fire Chief Paul Buckley. By about 7 p.m., Needham Police and Fire had received more than 100 calls related to the …

If your electricity goes out, do the following things to your phone to keep it in operation for as long as possible.
At around 3:30 p.m. Monday, NSTAR was reporting that 119 Needham customers were without power because of downed limbs, wires and other problems related to Hurricane Sandy. With the storm still going strong and more power outages likely to come, some local residents may only have their cellular phones available for accessing information. Should this happen, here are a number of phone settings to change in order to prolong your battery for as long as possible. 1. Turn Off Unnecessary Connections For those with iPhones, Android or other smartphones, you can extend the battery by turning off WiFi, 4G and/or 3G connections if available, or even putting your phone into airplane mode and only taking it off when you want to use the phone. All of …
Here are guidelines from the USDA regarding the safety of food in a refrigerator without power.
With Hurricane Sandy predicted to hit Needham hard today, losing power is a threat. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service prepared a fact sheet for keeping food safe during an emergency, including losing power. The USDA says to "keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature." But, the refrigerator will only keep food safely cold for about four hours if unopened during a power outage, according to the USDA. A full freezer will hold the temperature for about 48 hours if full (24 hours if half full), the USDA says. The USDA emphasizes "never to taste food to determine its safety" and says that you should "evaluate each item separately." Generally, if the temperature on the …

What nonsense - Needham had over 300 houses out this morning (Friday), according to NStar's own power outage map. We've been out for four days. I realize that some people will end with bad luck and not getting power back as quickly as others and that we ended up with the short end of the stick this time around, but it's really insensitive of NStar to be making public relations announcements that…   more ›
