Needham Selectmen Holding Hearing on Parking Lot

Tonight, share your thoughts on the Needham's Lincoln Street parking--including the buddy parking lot.

Do you get any use out of the "buddy parking" lots?  If so, you may want to say something tonight, at the Board of Selectmen's parking hearing at Town Hall tonight. According to an announcement on the Needham town website, the Selectmen will take up discussion of the Lincoln Street parking lot at 7 p.m. tonight in Powers Hall. The town has acquired some land in the surrounding area, and intends to expand the Lincoln Street lot. Among the plans, according to the announcement, switching the current 62 "buddy parking" spaces in the Lincoln Street lot in favor of standard parking spaces.  The land purchase was approved at Special Town Meeting last May, officials believe that an extra parking lot could alleviate some of the town center's …

Needham Town Meeting Passes Marijuana Moratorium

Medical marijuana dispensary centers temporarily banned from town until regulations are developed.

While medical marijuana is on its way to towns in Mass., Needham won't see any until next year.  Needham Annual Town Meeting voted Monday night to approve article 18, which imposes a moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries,  Needham Yourtown confirms. The moratorium was proposed in an early January meeting, and would allow officials to put off zoning regulations for up to a year. The Selectmen called it a move that made sense at a late January meeting. The delay will put decisions off until March 1, 2014.  Several Needham Health officials spoke out against the medical marijuana initiative, and Gov. Patrick said he would likely vote against the ballot question. Despite that, medical marijuana dispensaries were approved in the …

Planning Board Considering Medical Marijuana Moratorium Article

The Planning Board will deliberate their position on the medical marijuana moratorium warrant supported by the Selectmen.

Officials are not yet sure how medical marijuana dispensaries would work in Needham, and are trying to get some more time to examine the issue. The Selectmen presented their views on a warrant article, which would push that decision back for a year, to the Planning Board on Tuesday night. The Planning Board has not taken a position, but Selectmen hope they will back it before it heads to Town Meeting.  The article calls for a year-long moratorium, which would allow officials to address their questions and concerns about how to apply the outlined law at a town level.  Selectman Dan Matthews explained the Selectmen's position, "Purpose of the moratorium is not to do nothing, but to allow some thoughtful consideration. The moratorium time …

The closest I have ever seen marijuana come to harming anyone was during an air drop. We brought in 1100 pounds from Jamaica and dropped it in a peanut field in middle Georgia. The bales were dropped from a small plane at 125 feet altitude. One of the bales, about 80 pounds, missed my compadre by only a few feet... but it surely messed up his truck. You can read about it in: Shoulda Robbed a Bank…   more ›

Selectmen Honor Needham Soccer Div I Champions

Board of Selectmen present awards to Needham Soccer Team and captain Mac Steeves.

The Board of Selectmen honored both the Division I Champion Soccer Team, and their Captain, Mac Steeves at last night's Board of Selectmen meeting. Noting that Steeves' father and grandfather were both firefighters, Selectman Daniel Matthews noted “so it’s no surprise he knows how to respond to a tense situation.” Gatorade and USA Today's High School Sports section teamed up to award their Player of the Year award to a Needham Rocket in February, which the Board presented last night.

It was last Friday afternoon that Needham lost Selectman Chair Jerry Wasserman, his memorial service took place over the weekend. At last night's meeting, Selectman Daniel Matthews noted that Wasserman had played a role in most of the major town decisions for many years. “If his contributions weren’t countless,” Selectman Dan Matthews said, “they would be hard to count.” He joined the Board in 1999, and was a member of Needham Town Meeting and School Committee before that, Town Manager Kate Fitzpatrick writes in an email. He has also served on a number of other committees around town. Beyond his town …

Jerry will surely be missed because he was a good man. We may not have agreed on the "politics at play" in our town but I never doubted his desire "to do what was right". We may not have agreed on all the issues but Jerry could always be counted on to listen. I will miss Jerry Wasserman; the sparkle in his eyes when he spoke of his family, the laughter in his voice when he spoke of himself, the …   more ›

Yesterday afternoon, Needham lost Selectman Chair Jerry Wasserman. The funeral ceremony is at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 3 at Needham's Temple Beth Shalom, Selectman John Bulian told Patch in a brief phone call yesterday. Wasserman joined the Board in 1999, and was a member of Needham's School Committee before that, Town Manager Kate Fitzpatrick wrote in an email yesterday. He has also served on a number of other committees around town. Beyond his town duties, Wasserman played with a folk band, Jerry and the Great Experiment, and had recorded a live album last July. Jerry was a caring and committed citizen of Needham. We have all benefitted from his years of service to the Town. Those of us who had the opportunity to work with him over those years were better because he made us better. Thanks, Jerry. You will be missed. Dick Reilly, Finance Committee Chair   more ›

Needham Selectmen: Medical Marijuana Moratorium 'Makes Sense'

Board of Selectmen voted last night on a delay of the medical marijuana question passed by Mass. voters in November.

Medical marijuana dispensaries were approved in the November vote, and the law is set to go into effect within the month--but not in Needham, yet. A moratorium proposed in an early January meeting would allow officials to put off zoning regulations for up to a year. The Selectmen voted last night unanimously in favor of that delay until March 1, 2014.  Said Selectmen Maurice Handel, "This is respectful of the vote that voters of Massachusetts took, and allows for adequate response from the town. It makes complete sense to do this." The concept, officials say, is to wait for the Mass Department of Public Health regulations and guidelines about the law before starting to write comparable zoning for Needham. "It's smart to have cooling off …

Marijuana remains the only Schedule I drug that DEA prohibits from being produced by private laboratories for scientific research. Although DEA has licensed multiple privately-funded manufacturers of all other Schedule I drugs, it permits just one facility, located at the University of Mississippi, to produce marijuana for research purposes. This facility, under contract with NIDA, holds a …   more ›

New England Business Park Name Picked

Selectmen vote in favor of a name for the neighborhood which will soon house TripAdvisor.

There was an early leader in the quest for a new neighborhood name, and it seems to have stuck. Needham Crossing is the name the Board of Selectmen announced and voted on at last night's meeting. The Board unanimously accepted the Council of Economic Advisors' recommendation to name the area between Route 128 and the border of Newton.  "Needham Crossing is a good fit geographically." Selectman Chair Daniel Matthews explained that the name "establishes that it is part of the town, but you can’t get there without crossing one of the principal geographic features of the area: Route 128 or the Charles River." After kicking around a few suggestions of their own, the Council of Economic Advisors threw the question open to residents. Citizens …
