Needham Police announce Medicine Take Back day, April 27.
If you have any old meds in your cabinet, this weekend is the time to get rid of them. Make sure you don't have anything expired, and ensure your old pills or syrups in the back don't make it into the wrong hands accidentally. An announcement on the town website says there is a collection of unused and expired medications in the driveway of the Needham Police Department, 99 School St. Stop by any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Some time today, the announcement reccomends you check the expiration dates on any medications you have at home: over the counter, prescription, cough and cold, etc. However, they do not accept needles, thermometers, medical waste or illicit drugs. If you can’t make it to the disposal event, there is always a box…

By Erica Streit-Kaplan Public Health Program Coordinator Needham Department of Public Health With the population of those ages 65 or over increasing rapidly in both Needham and the United States, alcohol abuse among older adults is a serious and growing problem. Alcohol abuse among older adults gets less attention than drinking among young adults, but older adults actually are at high risk of alcohol abuse and related health problems. Some older adults engage in binge drinking, defined as consuming four or more drinks for women and five or more drinks for men on an occasion. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while binge drinking is more common among young adults ages 18–34, of those age 65 and …

By Ruth Griffin, RD, SNS Submitted by the Needham Public Health Department As students return to school this fall, school cafeterias across America will be doing things a little differently as they prepare to feed “their kids” and strive to meet tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals. The new USDA standards are required by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 and are based on research and current understanding of human nutrition and prevention of diseases and health conditions including obesity. The last update to school meals standards was over 15 years ago. This is a good thing for the children in our country! What's different? In a nutshell, the school lunch tray should now look a lot like the new USDA’s “MyPlate”—…

Needham officials have received multiple calls about bats inside homes in recent weeks, and the Needham Public Health Department and Needham Animal Control are working together to let residents know what to do if they come across the animals. Calls to public health agencies regarding bats and the potential exposure to bats are on the rise this time of year, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported in a press release distributed by Needham Public Health Nurse Donna Carmichael. Bats often choose to roost and raise their young in attics, according to the release, and after a few hot summer days, that space can become too warm for the bats, forcing them to move into people’s living quarters as they look for cooler places to roost…

Submitted by Carol Read, Needham Public Health Department Tragic stories of traffic-related deaths are rampant at the local and national level; we are inundated daily with media reports of the loss of life resulting from car crashes attributed to drinking under the influence of alcohol. Some Americans are desensitized to the statistics and research that validate the alarming rate of accidents caused by drivers who test positive for alcohol. In 2009, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 10, 839 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (32 percent) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. An alarming 25 percent of drivers, between the ages of 15 to 20 years who died in…

Submitted by the Needham Public Health Department It’s that time of year again—mosquito breeding season. The Needham Public Health Department would like to remind you of some important tips to help prevent the possibility of contracting mosquito-borne illnesses, specifically, West Nile Virus (WNV) or Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). There is a low risk of WNV infection following a mosquito bite. Most people who are bitten by infected mosquitoes experience no illness or only mild illness, but a small number of people develop a more serious disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the summer of 2012 may be one of the worst on record in years for mosquitoes. The warm winter has created conditions which allow for mosquito …

The town held its first Responsible Beverage Server training program on June 5.
Needham is still at least a year away from voting on whether to allow shops to sell packaged wine, beer or liquor in town. But recently, the town took steps to ensure that establishments currently licensed to sell alcohol by the glass are trained in best practices to run a safe, healthy operation. On Tuesday, June 5, the town held its first Responsible Beverage Server training program for liquor licensees in Needham. Sponsored by the Board of Selectmen, the Public Health Department and the Needham Police Department and funded by a federal grant through the Needham Coalition for Youth Substance Abuse Prevention, the training program was deemed "a great success" by those who organized it, according to Cathy Toran of the Needham Public Health…

October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, I laugh at this one. When is the state and federal goverment going to learn you have lost the war on drugs. Do these functioning morons really think a National Substance Abuse Prevention Month is going to make any real difference. It will NOT stop people from drinking or using drugs. It will just give us a good laugh as we get out drinks ready…   more ›
