The adage goes that you can't build a better mouse trap, but what about a bike rack? Liam Walsh, a Needham High School sophomore has a couple of suggestions to improve a recently-installed bike rack at the school. These he submitted to Raytheon's MathMovesU, a program aimed at getting middle and high school students interested in math and science, which he learned about through a school bulletin. Walsh's design is one of ten finalists in the contest, currently ranked third. The winning entry will net his/her school a $2,000 prize. The problem Walsh noticed was that the bike rack by the school's main entrance is not being used. He believes this is because of its proximity to the school entrance and exposure to the elements leave bikes …

On Monday, #4 Needham Girls Lacrosse traveled to State #1 Westwood and gave the home squad everything they could handle, coming up just short in a thrilling 10-9 loss. In the game, Senior Captain Maddie Stenberg broke the 400 total career point mark! Below is a write up from head coach Beth O'Brien: This week marked an exciting week for Needham Girl's Lacrosse with a hard fought battle against #1 Westwood and an important milestone being reached. Needham went shot for shot and battle for battle, but came up short losing to Westwood 10-9, with final goal being scored with only 75 seconds left in the game. The school did rank in the top 500 nationally by US News, coming in at #356 nationwide and #18 in the state. The school district was also listed in Boston Magazine's top 20 list, coming in at #14. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. The following was provided by the Needham High School Athletics Department During a week when Needham Varsity teams went 16-7, the Rockets saw four teams come away with no loses, five teams only lose once, and only one team lose two contests. Boys Volleyball kept their hot streak going, sweeping all BSC teams during the week, taking down Braintree, Framingham and Brookline. At 12-2 (11-0 BSC), the 4th ranked Rockets have already qualified for the State Tournament and will look to take one step closer to the BSC title against Weymouth and Wellesley this week. April 24, Needham and Norwood swap games for the first two rounds, before Needham takes the final match. Needham remains atop the Bay State Standings with 7 wins to none, and are 8 wins and 2 losses overall. Led by Sam Tillotson (15 kills), Trevor Dow (13 kills) and Andrew Tegeler (8 kills), Needham won the first game 25-20, the second 25-10 and the last 25-15. The Needham Rockets picked up the first victory of the season against Reading. A new video from the Needham Channel highlights the game, which ended 16-3. "It was a cold and windy day, which may have affected the teams," according to an email from the Needham Channel.

If someone shoots you a text message today, Needham Youth Services hopes you won't reply--call them back instead. Today is Text-Free Tuesday, part of the month-long series of Needham Unplugged events, aimed at reminding students that "there is more to life than what is on the other side of a plug." For March 26, Youth Services is encouraging both residents and businesses to reach out to friends and business associates by phone or in person, rather than punch out a text on your phone. They also suggest you contact them to let them know why their texts may go unanswered. Didn't see it mentioned if Needham Public Schools completed the survey upon which these rankings were based. That would need to have happened first. In addition, the criteria were not all listed, and it's certainly possible the criteria used were not how we focus our efforts in Needham. Not enough info to know.
