125th Annual Needham-Wellesley Thanksgiving Football Game Recap: The Rivalry Continues

Crowd of 5,000 attends Needham's victory at home in this special edition of Rockets Review.

With a scoreless last quarter, and a final score of 39 to 21, Needham claimed the 125th annual thanksgiving football game.  Going into the game, Wellesley had the edge, with a 59-57-9 all-time record, Needham has two years straight going into this game--according to USA Today High School Sports. Five Things You Need to Know Today: 125-Year Thanksgiving Game Edition

125 years ago, Needham and Wellesley will face each other in a traditional football game. Here are Five Things about it.

1. Thanksgiving day looks to be a sunny and warm one, with temperatures hitting 52ºF, and then dipping to 33ºF in the mostly clear evening, according to the National Weather Service.  2. Needham hosts the game, and rivals from Wellesley for the 125th time at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Park. Tickets to the game are $10.  3. The first game was in 1882, but they are playing for the 125th time, because World War I meant the teams had to take a couple of seasons off. According to a Boston Herald story from last year, this is the country’s oldest public high school rivalry.  4. Is Needham-Wellesley the Best Rivalry in Mass?

USA Today attempts to find the best football rivalry in the state and then the Nation--and Wellesley-Needham is on the list--and in the running for a cash prize

Wellesley and Needham's football teams met for the first time in 1882. Tomorrow, they meet for the 125th time (with a few years taken off because of World War I). According to a Boston Herald story from last year, this is the country’s oldest public high school rivalry.  But is it the best rivalry in Massachusetts? USA Today's High School Sports site is looking for the Best High School Rivalry in the Commonwealth. The Needham-Wellesley game is one of three rivalries selected for the Mass. poll. Also on the list, Salem versus Beverly and St. John's Prep in Danvers vs. Xaverian in Westwood. With 2011 slowly coming to a close, and 2012 days away, it’s time to look back on the past year of Needham High School athletics. Here’s 10 moments that’ll forever be remembered from the past 12 months. 1. Needham Rockets Football Fall to BC High At Gillette Stadium: This was indeed one of the crowning moments of the past year, as the Rockets varsity football team accomplished their goal of playing on the grassy, green turf at Gillette Stadium. However, the outcome wasn’t as planned, as Needham fell to Boston College High School, 21-7. Yet, a valiant effort was displayed, as the Rockets, who held the Eagles running and passing game in tact, despite allowing a 91-yard touchdown dash by Deonate Ramey-Do in the second quarter. 2. Eagles Beat Rockets in D1 Super Bowl

The Needham High School varsity football team fell to BC High 21-7 in their first ever MIAA championship game.

Boston College High School senior running back Deonae Ramey-Doe rushed for 200 yards on 24 carries and scored all three touhdowns, as the Eagles handed Needham a loss in their first Super Bowl game in school history. Needham's sophomore quarterback Ryan Charter tossed four interceptions, while senior running back Mike Vespa led the Rockets' ground game with 60 yards on 16 carries. Vespa also recorded the only touchdown of the game in the first quarter, as Charter connected with him on a five-yard pass. WBSM.com To Stream Football Game

AM talk/sports station will provide coverage during the Needham-New Bedford semi-final game tonight.

For those Rockets fans who can't make the Division I semi-final game tonight between Needham and New Bedford, the game will be streaming tonight online at www.wbsm.com, according to Needham Athletic Director Micah Hauben. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Weymouth High School. Look for coverage of the game tomorrow on Needham Patch.

Reporters Notebook: Boys Soccer Concludes Season, Football One Win Away From Playoffs

A look at some of the latest news and notes from the Needham Rockets.

It’s been a rather quiet week on the sports front in Needham, as a majority of the fall squads have concluded their season, while a few winter teams have begun preparations for their upcoming slates. Here’s some of the latest news pertaining toward the boys varsity soccer and football teams. Boys Soccer Looks to the Future   It’s been a few days since the Needham High School boys varsity soccer season came to an end at Medway High School, but after their final game against Greater New Bedford concluded, both head coach Don Brock and senior goalkeeper Jake Bronstein reflected on the loss, as well as looked ahead to next season.  “It [was] tough to end the season [losing in overtime] because we knew we had more in it, more games to be won, …

Needham Football Notches Win On Senior Night

The Rockets defeat the Newton North Tigers, 23-8.

Nobody likes being mired in the doldrums. The Needham High School football team certainly elevated itself above that status Friday night, beating Bay State (Carey) Conference-foe Newton North, 23-8, and snapping a two-game losing streak in the process. “We needed a victory,” Needham coach David Duffy said. “Two weeks in a row with losses. We played well tonight. We made some mistakes, but not as many as we made in the past. We got a big victory, putting us on track for Thanksgiving and the game against Wellesley.”   He continued, “The kids needed the win. We were getting beat up and down on ourselves a little bit. It’s been an exciting past couple of days in the town of Needham, as their hometown Rockets varsity soccer teams have experienced a great deal of success in the MIAA Division I South tournaments. Patch Chats with Mark Riley

Mark Riley, senior co-captain of the Needham High School varsity football team, talks about the season thus far and his favorite football moments. The team will take the field tonight at home against Natick.

Senior co-captain Mark Riley has been a pivotal part of the defense for this year's Needham High School varsity football team and has been described by other coaches in the Bay State Conference as the best tight end in the state. But the humble Riley doesn’t let anything interfere with his game—he's just focused on having fun and working hard. Needham Patch stopped by the practice field recently to chat with Riley, who shared his thoughts about the season, recent wins and his favorite football moments in the Rockets uniform. After last week’s win against Walpole, you, as well as senior co-captains Pete Madsen and Mike Vespa brought the game ball to Drew Burnett. Talk about that particular experience.
