Needham Responding to Garage Fire on Central Avenue

Garage attached to two-story home reportedly caught fire.

  Needham Fire and Police Departments responded to a working fire at 808 Central Avenue, according to scanner and Twitter reports at about 5 p.m. The fire seems to have started in a garage attached to a two-story colonial house, with a car parked inside.  About 30 minutes later, reports indicated that the bulk of the fire had been knocked down.  Patch will have more as it develops.

UPDATE: Car Strikes Barrier in Dedham on Route 128; One Person Injured

A car crashed into a jersey barrier in Needham.

UPDATE, 1:16 p.m.: According to State Police, the 57-year-driver, a Bridgewater resident, "left the highway" and continued to drive on an unpaved construction road near exit 15. As he neared exit 17, the car hit a construction truck and fell down an embankment. The driver was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police are investigating whether the driver had a medical issue. -- UPDATE, 11:45 a.m.: According to WBZ-TV, the crash technically took place in Dedham when a driver entered an off-limits roadway near a construction zone and became stuck on a jersey barrier.  UPDATE: 11:03 a.m.: According to NECN reporter Jennifer Eagan's Twitter feed, the driver was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening …

Explosion on Fairfield Street, Needham

All occupants accounted for after explosion

  The Needham Fire Department responded to an explosion in the basement of 132 Fairfield Road, which caused some structural damage. All of the occupants have been accounted for. Scanners picked up the incident at about 1:15 p.m. The building inspector has been requested.

Update: Power Outage in Chestnut Street Area

Traffic signals on Chestnut Street were not working Friday morning

Updated at 1:33 p.m. Several buildings and at least two traffic lights in the area of Chestnut Street near Great Plain Avenue were without power this morning while NSTAR workers dealt with a faulty underground cable. The heavy underground lines had been "sparking and smoking," Needham Fire Chief Paul Buckley said. NSTAR spokesman Mike Durand said the outage lasted about 45 minutes and affected 69 NSTAR customers. “There was a section of underground cable on Chestnut Street that failed, so we had to make repairs to that,” Durand said. The power has since been restored and the work completed, Durand said.
