Needham Takes Back the Night

Exhibit and collection boxes installed in Needham in support of the sixth annual Take Back the Night event, which is Saturday.

  For six years now, a number of Needham residents have been working to Take Back the Night. The sixth annual Take Back the Night event will be at Needham Town Hall on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. The event aims to raise awareness of dating and domestic abuse, and sexual abuse, and will have two speakers who will talk about their experiences. Town Hall is displaying the Silent Witness project, red silhouette statues of victims of domestic violence during the days leading up to the event. The event will also feature entertainment by Fermata Nowhere, Subway Dwarves, Treble Rebels, Charles Winston, Jon Higgins and Sam Evans and Erica Serano, according to the event's Facebook page.  Needham Domestic Violence Awareness Committee (DVAC) announced …

Parents Key in Preventing Dating Violence

Local action committee is raising awareness of the issue of teen dating violence during the month of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This fall, the nation’s attention has once more refocused on teen dating violence. Last week, Vice President Biden called on the nation’s teens to collectively organize and share their ideas for preventing dating violence and sexual assault through the “1is2many” campaign. The SAFE Teen Act (Senate Bill 1447), which would expand use of existing funds for teen dating violence prevention, is now winding its way into committee, and a new iPhone app called “Love is Not Abuse” is teaching parents about the signs of dating abuse. All of this isn’t enough. In Massachusetts, one in 10 teens are physically or sexually assaulted by a dating partner. Most teen victims of dating violence don’t tell anyone. Dating Violence More Prevalent Than Many Believe

There is hazing on sports teams, a domestic violence homicide, a suicide attributed to bullying. But at least this isn’t happening in our community, in our schools, in our teens’ lives. For many years, we’ve safely hidden behind this rhetoric, which has led many of us to believe a scary myth: It’s not my issue—these are not my kids. But they are your kids.
