Needham Selectmen Holding Hearing on Lincoln Lot

Share your thoughts on the Needham's Lincoln Street parking--including the buddy parking lot.

Do you get any use out of the "buddy parking" lots?  If so, you may want to say something tonight, at the Board of Selectmen's parking hearing at Town Hall tonight. According to an announcement on the Needham town website, the Selectmen will take up discussion of the Lincoln Street parking lot at 7 p.m. next Tuesday night in Powers Hall. The town has acquired some land in the surrounding area, and intends to expand the Lincoln Street lot. Among the plans, according to the announcement, switching the current 62 "buddy parking" spaces in the Lincoln Street lot in favor of standard parking spaces.  The land purchase was approved at Special Town Meeting last May, officials believe that an extra parking lot could alleviate some of the town …

I have seen the buddy spaces being used, but I'm not typically in the lot during the weekdays. Those that use them should decide if they should stay. There isn't enough parking for town employees nor those that work in the local businesses. There has to be some place for them to park too. On the other hand, there is definitely need for more parking. Perhaps if Lincoln St. parking is expanded, …   more ›

7-Eleven Looking to Open New Location 24-Hours a Day

Special permit which would allow 24-hour operation of a new convenience store in an empty storefront on Chestnut Street.

24-hour convenience may soon be coming to Needham, if a permit goes through. In a public hearing slated for March 19, The Board of Selectmen will consider a permit to allow 7-Eleven to open for 24 hours a day. According to an announcement on the town website, the convenience store plans to open in the former Friendly's location.  The longstanding ice cream shop closed its doors in October 2011 and has since remained empty. The Friendly's Ice Cream Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is when the family restaurant shuttered. People with comments about the application can voice those at the meeting on March 19, 7 p.m. at Town Hall, or can contact the Selectmen by e-mail selectmen@town.needham.ma.us, or letter. What do you …

It doesn't matter. What does matter is the fact that Needham doesn't need a 20th convenience store and that there are many better options than a 7-11 when opening a shop.   more ›

Question of the Day: Should Massachusetts Expand Its Bottle Bill?

Share your opinion in the comments.

The Massachusetts House is scheduled to debate an expanded version of the commonwealth's Bottle Bill this week, and many have mixed feelings on the issue. Here in Needham, state Rep. Denise Garlick is a supporter of the bill, seeing it as a "natural progression" of the original bill passed in 1987 which established a 5-cent returnable deposit for certain types of bottles. The new bill would expand that piece of legislation to include water, juice and sports drink bottles, which have become much more common two decades after the original bill was passed. "In making my decision about co-sponsoring that bill, I thought not only about the positive environmental impacts but I wanted to be assured that there are also positive business aspects," …

The bottle bill is THE most effective way to get beverage bottles and cans returned and recycled. 71 % of them get returned for deposit and recycled. By contrast, only 22% of the non-deposit containers (bottled water. iced tea, sports drinks & juice) get recycled. The rest end up being trashed or littered, costing taxpayers about $7 million in collection and disposal fees. The House should join …   more ›

Selectmen Mixed on Bottle Bill Support

Board debates merits of adding water bottles, sports drinks to 5-cent deposit list.

Needham selectmen had mixed views on a proposed update to the Massachusetts Bottle Bill, considering the merits and possible negative effects of adding containers to the list of those requiring a 5-cent returnable deposit. Though the issue will be decided by the state legislature, local officials were considering the idea of writing a letter of support for the bill—House Bill 890—at their meeting Tuesday night, but without a clear consensus, they opted not to join the debate as a board. Selectmen Moe Handel and Jerry Wasserman voiced support of the bill, which seeks to add plastic water bottles, sports drinks and similar beverage containers to the list of items that require a 5-cent returnable deposit. Selectmen Dan Matthews and Jim Healy …

What do people think about this matter? What is the logic behind the existing required redemption and recycling practises? What is the logic, expressed by the Selectmen, in extending or denying more waste handling? What are the costs and benefits? And why should you pay for somebody elses trash?   more ›
