The Needham gymnasts moved to 4-0 on the season with their big BSC Carey win over Newton North on Friday. With the 133.25-131.10 win, the team finds itself with an outside chance to qualify for the State Team competition, while Senior Maria Smirnov and Junior Maggie Nieto turned in strong individual performances to help propel the Rockets. Boys Swim and Dive used two wins on the week to move to 4-3 on the season, with victories over Natick, 94-81, on Friday, and Newton North, 95-91, on Monday. While the Indoor Track Teams were not able to take down the mighty Tigers of Newton North in dual-meets on Thursday, they did test the perennial State power in both the Boys and Girls competitions. The following was sent to Patch by Amy Goldstein: NHS Wrestling went 2-2 on the week, facing some of the top competition in the Bay State League and state. On Wednesday night, The Rockets dropped a close one to undefeated Bay State League rival, Braintree, 48-34. In the loss, Needham saw some great performances from Freshman Lucas Goldman, Senior Captains Mark Carroll and Mikhail Khibkin, Junior Zach Goldman, Seniors Islam Baiev and John Cronin, all earning pins or technical falls for the team. "Our guys beat some of their best guys," Said Coach Paul Ahern, "But in the end, we lost those toss-up matches." MIAA TOURNAMENT RE-CAP: BOYS SOCCER WINS DI STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! On Friday night (11/16) at Worcester State College, the Rockets defeated Amherst Regional HS 1-0 for Title! Senior Mac Steeves scored the game winner in 72nd minute and the Team held on for their 16th shut-out of the season. The Boys finish season at 21-1-3 and ranked in the top-20 Nationally! Boys Soccer Division I South Champions DI South Champion Needham Boys Soccer took home the EMASS title on Wednesday night in Lynn with a tough 2-1 victory over previously undefeated Somerville! Senior Mac Steeves scored both goals for Needham in the first half and the team held Somerville scoreless in the second for the win. The Rockets advance to their first State Championship Game in 17 years on Friday night at 7:30pm vs DI West Champion Amherst Regional High School at Worcester State University. Boys Soccer On Sunday night in Braintree, the Needham Boys Soccer Team took one more step towards their goal of a State Title, as they defeated league rival and second-seeded Weymouth 2-0 in the Division I South Championship Game. Senior Nolan Brady notched the first goal of the game in the 70th minute and Senior Brandon Miskin added a late insurance goal with less than 3 minutes to play to secure the victory. #1 Boys Soccer Advances to South Final vs Weymouth: 11/11 @ Braintree HS - 7:30pm The top-seeded Needham Boys Soccer Team defeated Dartmouth 3-0 in a DI Semi-Final on Friday night to advance to the South Final at Braintree HS on Sunday (11/11). Senior WIll Corkery started off the scoring early in the first half, with Hantzley Murat tipping in a loose ball and Aram Ouligian heading in a Mac Steeves throw-in for the 3-0 win. In the other South Semi-Final, BSC Carey Division rival #2 Weymouth beat Olives Ames 3-2 in overtime. Needham and Weymouth will meet for a third time this season, with Needham owning one win and one tie, at 7:30pm on Sunday with a trip to the DI State Semi-Finals on the line.
