Kennedy Inspires First Openly Gay NBA Player's Coming Out

Jason Collins was a roommate of Needham's congressional representative.

NBA center Jason Collins announced Monday he is gay, making him the first active professional male athlete in a major American sport to reveal he is a homosexual. The former Boston Celtic wrote about his decision in a Sports Illustrated article that went online Monday, and will appear in the May 6 print edition of the magazine. Collins, 34, wrote he decided to come out after U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III, whose district includes Needham, told him he had marched last year in Boston's Gay Pride Parade. Kennedy was Collins' roomate at Stanford University. Collins wrote: I'm seldom jealous of others, but hearing what Joe had done filled me with envy. Kennedy: 'Honored' to be Sworn in to Congress

After winning the November 2012 election, Democrat Joe Kennedy III will now officially take his seat as the U.S. Rep. for the Fourth Congressional District.

Newton's newest congressman, Joe Kennedy III, was officially sworn in Thursday, Jan. 3 as a member of the nation's 113th Congress.  Kennedy, who defeated Republican Sean Bielat in November, replaces retiring U.S. Rep. Barney Frank in the Fourth Congressional District. Congressman-Elect Joe Kennedy III Weds in California

Kennedy married his Harvard Law School classmate Lauren Birchfield.

Just a month after he clinched the Fourth Congressional District seat, Joseph Kennedy III celebrated another important milestone on Saturday: his wedding. Kennedy, 32, wed fellow Harvard Law School classmate Lauren Anne Birchfield at the Community Church in Corona del Mar, Calif., according to a My Fox Boston report earlier today. The ceremony was officiated by Birchfield's father, the Rev. Jim Birchfield, My Fox Boston reported. Kennedy To Announce Candidacy

Sources say Joseph Kennedy III will officially join the race for the Fourth Congressional District at an event in Newton on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Although he's already leading in polls and gaining endorsements, Joseph Kennedy III has yet to officially enter the race for the Fourth Congressional District, which now includes Needham. But that will change tomorrow. In a press release issued Wednesday evening, Kennedy's campaign reps said he will offficially announce his candidacy tomorrow, Feb. 16. A video announcement will be posted on www.joekennedy2012.com in the morning.  Following his announcement, Kennedy is set to make five stops in the district, starting in Newton.
