Two weeks after he was officially sworn into office, Fourth District Congressman Joe Kennedy III has his first House committee and subcommittee assignments. In a statement released today, Kennedy announced that he has been appointed to the the Subcommittee on Middle East and North Africa and the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade. After winning the November 2012 election, Democrat Joe Kennedy III will now officially take his seat as the U.S. Rep. for the Fourth Congressional District.
Newton's newest congressman, Joe Kennedy III, was officially sworn in Thursday, Jan. 3 as a member of the nation's 113th Congress. Kennedy, who defeated Republican Sean Bielat in November, replaces retiring U.S. Rep. Barney Frank in the Fourth Congressional District. Joe Kennedy III will be a new U.S. Congressman from Massachusetts. At around 9:30 p.m., the Associated Press called the race for 32-year old Kennedy, who lives in Brookline, as he was beating by a 2-1 margin Norfolk Republican Sean Bielat in the race to represent the redrawn Fourth Congressional District. Needham residents may have seen a CBS TV news crew around town this weekend or early Monday, as part of a report on the Joe Kennedy III campaign. In the video, which can be viewed online, Kennedy’s famous family roots are highlighted, and clips are shown of the candidate walking through neighborhoods in Needham and nearby and meeting with voters. The Democratic National Convention will have a Massachusetts feel tonight as Gov. Deval Patrick and Congressional candidate Joe Kennedy III are scheduled to speak before the convention. Kennedy is scheduled to speak during the 7 p.m. hour after a Kennedy family tribute video. Two hours later, Patrick is scheduled to finish the 9 p.m. hour. The night will also include a number of prominent speakers, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reed, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, and Secretary of Health and Human Services Director Kathleen Sibelius, and will conclude with a speech by First Lady Michelle Obama.
