PHOTOS: Local, State Officials Celebrate New Improvement to Hemlock Gorge

Volunteers to Clean Up Hemlock Gorge

Help out this weekend by picking up around this Needham/Newton park.

This weekend, volunteers will work to keep it that way.  People interested in preserving the area's natural beauty can join together this weekend to help clean up Hemlock Gorge Reservation, a 23-acre park along the Charles River in Newton and Needham. Hemlock Gorge is known for its Hemlock trees surrounding the river and Echo Bridge, which crosses the river and gorge. According to the DCR Web site, the bridge was the second largest masonry arch in the United States when it was built in 1877. In 1982, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. This twice-annual cleanup, taking place on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, will consist of volunteers picking…

A Summer Evening at Hemlock Gorge

The Friends hosted their annual picnic concert at the reservation in Needham on Tuesday, Aug. 23.

After rain pushed out the group's last attempt at a summer picnic, the Friends of Hemlock Gorge finally gathered Tuesday evening to celebrate the last moments of summer. The annual event was held on the Needham side of the reservation at Hamilton Place and included music, food, fun and, of course, gorgeous weather. For more information on the Friends of Hemlock Gorge, visit the organization's Web site.
