Needham Knocks Off King Phillip, 4-1

The Rockets compiled four goals against the Warriors on Monday, advancing to the MIAA Division I South quarter finals on Wednesday.

It’s been roughly three years since the Needham Rockets won their first-round MIAA Division I South playoff match, and on Monday evening, Don Brock’s crew made sure their season continued, as they defeated No. 20 King Philip, 4-1 under the lights at Memorial Field. “We played well enough to win. They’re an aggressive team, which we knew, and they didn’t stop. We scored some nice goals—some beautiful goals, a matter of fact—and anytime you get 4-1, especially the last two years, we’ve gone one-and-out, so we’re glad to get over that hump,” Needham head coach Don Brock said. Needham set the tone midway through the first half, as sophomore Harry Swartz and juniors Nolan Brady and Mac Steeves compiled three goals in a span of 20 minutes to …

Boys Soccer Picks Up 11th Win

Rockets varsity team earned an important win on Tuesday, defeating Norwood, 2-0.

There's no question that it's better when your team is leading by two goals late in the game instead of one, as was the case with the Needham boys varsity soccer team, who defeated Norwood on Tuesday, 2-0. “We’re all nervous when it’s 1-0 because all it takes is one weird little bounce or something and the other team is back in it, which could happened very easily,” head coach Don Brock said. “We shut them down, and that was crucial.”    The Rockets picked up their intensity from Sunday’s drubbing against the Bridgewater-Raynham with an early goal by Brandon Miskin. Although, once the Needham first goal celebration concluded, Norwood’s goalkeeper Andrew Stover kept the Mustangs in contention until mid-way through the second half, which was…

Photo Gallery: Boys Soccer Beats Up Braintree

The Rockets earned their fifth win of the season, as Will Corkery, Harry Swartz and Jason Miller each registered goals against the Wamps.

Mother Nature's unseasonably warm weather didn't impact the Needham Rockets boys varsity soccer team, who earned their fifth win of the season on Monday against the Braintree Wamps.  Sophomore Harry Swartz helped Needham get on the board early, before he, as well as junior Will Corkery and freshman Jason Miller, combined for three second half strikes.  Needham will return to the pitch on Wednesday when they travel to Newton North for a 3:45 p.m. kick-off, while Braintree will look to rebound against Weymouth.

Boy's Soccer Falls to Wellesley, 4-2

The Rockets allowed three second half goals to the Raiders, as Needham loses their first game of the 2011 season.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half, and the score tied, Wellesley’s Gray Lewis scored on a crossing pass with his head to give the Raiders the lead before Auris Kveraga pushed the ball past Needham’s goaltender Jake Bronstein a few minutes later to secure the team’s third win of the season. “We really wanted to win against Needham, they’re a great team,” Lewis said after the game. “We had a tough start to the season against Framingham and then we pulled out a win against Dedham last week, (which) wasn’t that good of a win, but this (one) means a lot.” “The boys worked very hard,” Wellesley head coach Tim Mason said. “That’s 21 players (that) were absolutely superb. Every single player gave hundred percent, (and) they …

Swartz, Alpert Lead Boys Soccer Past Brookline, 2-0

Swartz registered his fourth goal of the season, as the Rockets earn an important conference win against the Warriors.

The Needham High School boys soccer team has jumped out to a fast start this season. In just two games, the Rockets have outscored their opponents, 12-1 and a major reason for their success is the play of junior midfielder Mac Steeves and sophomore back Harry Swartz, who’re both responsible for seven of the team’s goals. On Friday afternoon, Swartz and sophomore Daniel Alpert each recorded goals in the team’s second win of the season against Brookline High School, which seemed to make the club, as well as Needham’s head coach Don Brock, quite pleased. “We haven’t done much against [Brookline] for several years and we played them pretty even, but we haven’t pulled off a victory, so pulling off a victory against an all-senior club, …
