Selectmen Mixed on Bottle Bill Support

Board debates merits of adding water bottles, sports drinks to 5-cent deposit list.

Needham selectmen had mixed views on a proposed update to the Massachusetts Bottle Bill, considering the merits and possible negative effects of adding containers to the list of those requiring a 5-cent returnable deposit. Though the issue will be decided by the state legislature, local officials were considering the idea of writing a letter of support for the bill—House Bill 890—at their meeting Tuesday night, but without a clear consensus, they opted not to join the debate as a board. Selectmen Moe Handel and Jerry Wasserman voiced support of the bill, which seeks to add plastic water bottles, sports drinks and similar beverage containers to the list of items that require a 5-cent returnable deposit.
