New Van Keeps Council on Aging's Busy Grocery Program Moving

The vehicle was purchased through a state grant and with a large donation from the Friends of the Needham Elderly.

The Needham Council on Aging has a new set of wheels. Thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Needham Elderly and a Mobility Assistance Program Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Council on Aging recently received a new 14-passenger van, complete with wheelchair lift and other features that help make travel easy and enjoyable for the many Needham residents participating in council programs. The van has taken the place of the old vehicle, a 12-passenger model from 2004. Because the department relies on donations and grant funding, not town money, to pay their van drivers, they can only put one vehicle on the road at a time, said Jamie Brenner Gutner, executive director. We’re looking at that; we’d …

Name Proposed for New Senior Center

Fundraising efforts continue with an event scheduled Oct. 17 at Needham Golf Club.

The new senior center is rapidly taking shape, as workers plug away at the two-story building, to be located at Hillside Avenue and West Street. Now representatives from the Needham Council on Aging have proposed a name for the new building: The Center at Needham Heights. “We listened to a lot of people’s ideas, and the consensus was to leave the ‘senior center’ out of it, because everyone’s probably going to call it that anyway,” said Steve Cadigan, a member of the Friends of the Needham Elderly. The name refers to the location of the new building and also might help attract those members of the community who don’t consider themselves “seniors,” Cadigan said. Selectmen are expected to vote on the name at their next meeting. The building …

Friends Seek Funds to Enhance New Senior Center

Campaign launched around Thanksgiving included 12,000 mailings to Needham residents and businesses, with a goal of raising $600,000.

As the town begins the process of constructing a new senior center, with a contractor to be picked sometime in February, the Friends of the Needham Elderly have begun their efforts to raise $600,000 to enhance the building with additional computers, exercise equipment and other upgrades. Though the town has promised $8.5 million for the construction and basic furnishing of the building, the additional funds will add to the new senior center, making it “as good as it can be,” according to Jamie Brenner Gutner, executive director of the Needham Council on Aging. The Friends had always planned to organize a fundraising effort to help with the project, and members of the group were ready to go the day after Town Meeting members approved the …

Senior Center Vote Nears

Supporters of the $8.5 million building project are hopeful, but cautious, as they look ahead to future fundraising plans.

With Needham’s special Town Meeting just over a month away, a new senior center is closer than ever. On Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Planning Board closed their public hearing on plans for the building. They will consider conditions of approval and likely OK the plans at their next meeting on Oct. 18. After the meeting, project proponents talked about being so close to making the new senior center a reality. “I think we’re all still tiptoeing,” said Colleen Schaller, a Council on Aging Board member. “We have never been this close, so nobody really wants to get overconfident—because, until Nov. 7, we just don’t know.” Schaller is also a member of the Friends of the Needham Elderly Steering Committee, which is organizing a fundraising campaign to …
