Joe Kennedy III Wins Fourth Congressional District Seat

Retiring Barney Frank will be succeeded by scion of Kennedy political dynasty.

Joe Kennedy III will be a new U.S. Congressman  from Massachusetts. At around 9:30 p.m., the Associated Press called the race for 32-year old Kennedy, who lives in Brookline, as he was beating by a 2-1 margin Norfolk Republican Sean Bielat in the race to represent the redrawn Fourth Congressional District. Rep. Barney Frank, a media celebrity Tuesday night at Kennedy's celebration party at the Newton Marriott Hotel, is retiring after serving the Fourth District since 1981. Yes, the Kennedys are a famous political family, but Joe III especially follows family tradition with this particular win: his father, Joe Kennedy II, served as Congressman from Massachusetts (in the 8th Congressional District) from 1987-1999. And his great-uncle, who …

Bielat, Kennedy Spar in Brief Television Debate

The 15-minute debate aired on Fox25 Morning News earlier today.

Although they had just a few minutes to make their case, Fourth Congressional District candidates Joe Kennedy III and Sean Bielat touted their experience and ideas in a Fox25 debate earlier this morning.  The live debate, which was moderated by Fox25 news host Gene Levanchy, lasted less than 15 minutes. This was the final scheduled television appearance for Bielat and Kennedy before the Nov. 6 general election.  Bielat, a Norfolk Republican, is running against Kennedy, a Brookline Democrat, to replace the retiring Fourth District Congressman Barney Frank, of Newton. Keeping with a theme that has run throughout the campaign, Bielat and Kennedy sparred on experience and whether Kennedy's name has carried him through the election.  "I think …

Kennedy, Bielat Debate Jobs and Healthcare at Wellesley College Candidates Forum

The MA 4th Congressional District candidates took questions from the audience at their third debate on Oct. 15.

With healthcare and the economy serving as key topics, the two candidates vying for the Massachusetts Fourth Congressional District seat agreed to disagree often at Monday night’s debate at Wellesley College. Republican Sean Bielat and Democrat Joseph P. Kennedy III debated in front of a capacity crowd at Wellesley College’s Alumnae Hall, with both candidates sticking closely to the scripts of their respective parties. The debate, the candidates’ third, began with a disagreement on how Bielat and Kennedy would go about reducing the national deficit by $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years. Kennedy led by accusing Bielat of endorsing Republican vice presidential candidate Congressman Paul Ryan’s budget, which would replace Medicare with a …

There's got to be a good comprimise we can reach which allows the MA 4th Cong Dist to put a qualified candidate in office (Bielat), yet still satisfy those that want to honor Massachusetts royalty. Maybe there's a job in Washington for Kennedy that takes place while Congress is in Recess. This would signifigantly limit the damage he could do, while still allowing folks to say they have a Kennedy …   more ›

Letter: Kennedy Is Qualified for the Job

This letter was submitted by a Needham resident.

A recent letter to the editor in the Needham Patch provided information about candidates Joe Kennedy III and Sean Bielat that was fundamentally incorrect. The assertion that Sean Bielat is more qualified for the Congressional seat is shockingly misleading. Joe Kennedy III has dedicated himself, like many of his family members before him, to a career in public service and has experience with a variety of developmental models. In Joe’s early professional career, and subsequent to his graduation from Stanford, he worked for the United Nations Development Program, with the Millenium Development Secretariat—a UN commission dedicated to eradicating poverty. Later, in 2004, Joe was accepted and served with distinction for over two years with the …
