Reporters Notebook: Boys Soccer Concludes Season, Football One Win Away From Playoffs

A look at some of the latest news and notes from the Needham Rockets.

It’s been a rather quiet week on the sports front in Needham, as a majority of the fall squads have concluded their season, while a few winter teams have begun preparations for their upcoming slates. Here’s some of the latest news pertaining toward the boys varsity soccer and football teams. Boys Soccer Looks to the Future   It’s been a few days since the Needham High School boys varsity soccer season came to an end at Medway High School, but after their final game against Greater New Bedford concluded, both head coach Don Brock and senior goalkeeper Jake Bronstein reflected on the loss, as well as looked ahead to next season.  “It [was] tough to end the season [losing in overtime] because we knew we had more in it, more games to be won, …

Boys Soccer Falls to Greater New Bedford, 3-2 OT

Needham's boys soccer tournament run concluded on Friday, as Greater New Bedford defeated the Rockets in the Division I South semi-finals.

After one of their most compelling wins of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 9, the Needham High School’s boy’s varsity soccer team fell short of one goal in overtime on Friday to Greater New Bedford, as the Bears stunned the Rockets, 3-2, and punched their ticket to the MIAA Division I South Finals. “We both fought so hard this game from the beginning whistle to the end. Credit goes out to [Greater New Bedford]. They played really tough, but I thought our guys played their hearts out,” said Needham goaltender Jake Bronstein. “The kids played hard, they played a great game,” said Needham head coach Don Brock. “They were back and fourth, and I’m not going to take it away from New Bedford, they did what they had to do.”    Needham’s Mac Steeves …

Reporters Notebook: Boys Soccer Keeps Championship Hopes Alive

A look at some of the latest news and notes from the Needham Rockets.

It’s been an exciting past couple of days in the town of Needham, as their hometown Rockets varsity soccer teams have experienced a great deal of success in the MIAA Division I South tournaments. Here’s a recap of the past few games, and updates on both teams, as well as some more exciting sports news pertaining to Needham High School.     Boys Soccer Advances to MIAA Division I South Semi-Finals The boys varsity soccer team kicked off their quest for a fourth state championship on Monday evening, Nov. 7 at Memorial Field with an impressive victory against King Phillip, which was followed up by a dramatic come-from-behind win against Silver Lake in overtime on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Both opposing coaches, King Phillip’s Kip Lewis and Silver …

Steeves OT Goal Lifts Needham Past Silver Lake, 2-1

Junior co-captain Mac Steeves scored in the first OT period to propel the Rockets to their second MIAA Division I South victory in three seasons.

After a rather quick, and easy win against King Phillip on Monday, Nov. 7, the Needham High School boys varsity soccer team returned to Memorial Field for the final time this season, and rallied to win a thriller against No. 5 Silver Lake High School in overtime, 2-1. “We’ve been to the state finals six times, and all six of those had a very close game somewhere along the way, but this is right up there,” Needham head coach Don Brock said. Both the Lakers and Rockets traded multiple shots throughout the first half but couldn’t muster a single goal until roughly three minutes into the second half, as Silver Lake senior forward Andrew Chenard gave his team a one goal advantage before Needham’s junior midfielder Nolan Brady tiptoed past the …

Needham Knocks Off King Phillip, 4-1

The Rockets compiled four goals against the Warriors on Monday, advancing to the MIAA Division I South quarter finals on Wednesday.

It’s been roughly three years since the Needham Rockets won their first-round MIAA Division I South playoff match, and on Monday evening, Don Brock’s crew made sure their season continued, as they defeated No. 20 King Philip, 4-1 under the lights at Memorial Field. “We played well enough to win. They’re an aggressive team, which we knew, and they didn’t stop. We scored some nice goals—some beautiful goals, a matter of fact—and anytime you get 4-1, especially the last two years, we’ve gone one-and-out, so we’re glad to get over that hump,” Needham head coach Don Brock said. Needham set the tone midway through the first half, as sophomore Harry Swartz and juniors Nolan Brady and Mac Steeves compiled three goals in a span of 20 minutes to …

Reporter's Notebook: Football, Soccer Facing Final Match-ups

Needham Rockets news, notes and games to watch for the coming weekend and week ahead.

Tuesday evening was definitely filled with joy and excitement, as the Needham High School girls varsity soccer team snapped their two-game losing streak against the Braintree Wamps and clinched a spot in the upcoming MIAA tournament. “They wanted to qualify, and they did what they needed to do. They had that good five minutes and finished their chances and that’s it,” said Braintree head coach Matthew Freeman, when asked to describe his thoughts on Needham’s overall play. For the girls soccer team, this certainly is a sigh of relief, especially for head coach Carl Tarabelli, who has mentioned numerous times this season that he’s coaching a young squad. However, last week’s matches against Norwood and Weymouth were valuable lessons, which …

Rockets QB Out of Commission

Needham Rockets news, notes and games to watch.

It’s been an interesting past couple of days for the Needham High School Rockets varsity football team, who lost senior captain and quarterback Drew Burnett to an ankle injury, which he sustained last weekend against Milton. “He wanted to stay in, I wanted him to stay in, so it was my decision and it apparently was a bad decision [because] he got hurt,” head coach Dave Duffy said. “I feel bad for him, and his high school career’s over, but his college career will still go on. After he recovers [from his injury], he’s going to be perfectly fine." Burnett, who wasn’t at the team’s practice on Wednesday, left an enormous void for Duffy, who will likely be forced to use three backup quarterbacks, (senior Dan Pierce, junior Matt McGloin and …

Boys Soccer Picks Up 11th Win

Rockets varsity team earned an important win on Tuesday, defeating Norwood, 2-0.

There's no question that it's better when your team is leading by two goals late in the game instead of one, as was the case with the Needham boys varsity soccer team, who defeated Norwood on Tuesday, 2-0. “We’re all nervous when it’s 1-0 because all it takes is one weird little bounce or something and the other team is back in it, which could happened very easily,” head coach Don Brock said. “We shut them down, and that was crucial.”    The Rockets picked up their intensity from Sunday’s drubbing against the Bridgewater-Raynham with an early goal by Brandon Miskin. Although, once the Needham first goal celebration concluded, Norwood’s goalkeeper Andrew Stover kept the Mustangs in contention until mid-way through the second half, which was…
