By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Needham High School's fall sports programs continued to excel in a week that saw five teams stay undefeated and all teams move to at least .500 on the young season. Girls swimming and diving, girls soccer, boys and girls cross country and football all have yet to lose, while golf (two wins), girls volleyball (one win), boys soccer (one win) and field hockey (one win), each had strong weeks as well. The NHS cheerleaders and dance team were in action at the football team's 42-7 win over Braintree on Friday night, Sept. 21, with the dance team also being recognized for their 2012 State Championship at halftime. Needham team won their third state title on March 11.
Needham selectmen congratulated the Needham High School Dance Team Tuesday evening on winning their third state title in the past four years. Board chairman Moe Handel read a proclamation congratulating the team, as the girls and two of their coaches, Paula Callanan and Trish Masi, looked on. The Needham team won their second championship in a row on March 11 at the Winter State Dance Championships, their third title in the last four years. Their routine featured strong technical skills and music from Whitney Houston and Aerosmith. Along with winning the state title in 2011, the team performed at half time of the NCAA Orange Bowl in Miami in January. By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics On Wednesday, Feb. 1 and Thursday, Feb. 2, the Needham High School boys swimming and diving team took part in the Bay State Conference Championship Meet at Brookline High School. After winning the regular season league title by going undefeated against BSC opponents, the boys wrapped up the league season by winning the meet championship. Finishing with the program's largest margin of victory in the league meet, the team will head into sectionals on Sunday, Feb. 12 at MIT with high hopes. By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Boys Hockey On Wednesday, Dec. 21, the eighth-ranked Needham High School boys ice hockey team, in their home-opener at Babson College, beat Wellesley 6-2 in front of a large and vocal crowd. The win moved the Rockets to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Bay State Conference and set them up for their match-up with top-5 Catholic Memorial on Dec. 28. Needham out-skated the visitors for much of the first two periods and saw one of Catholic Memorial’s top players ejected for a hit against the boards, but the team was not able to find the back of the net. Below is a recap of the tremendous action from Saturday from Head Coach Paul Hession: The Rocket swimmers and divers headed to MIT for Division I State Championships on Saturday looking to make some waves in the pool and they didn't disappoint.
