Thank YOU, Becca! Poor Kyra- they mispronounced her first name on Class Day, misspelled our last name in the graduation program AND totally got her name wrong in the yearbook (Lyra Shapiro? REALLY?!?!) - without a picture, to boot! Luckily, she's a trooper and really loves NHS (as do her parents and her brother, who will be graduating in two years)! Keep up the fanastic work at Needham Patch! :D   more ›

Senior Speech: Live in the Moment

The following is a graduation speech delivered by Needham High School Class President Ethan Samet-Marram during commencement ceremonies on Monday, June 6.

By Ethan Samet-Marram, Class of 2011 If you have ever been to a graduation ceremony before, you may have noticed that there are three kinds of graduation speeches. The first kind of speech focuses on the past. It asks the audience to marvel at our accomplishments, reminisce about our fantastic experiences and appreciate the lessons we learned, both inside and outside the classroom. As we celebrate Needham’s tercentennial, a call to the past seems especially appropriate. This year, we reflect on the destiny that led 100 colonists to establish a town that we, the Needham High Class of 2011, now represent. We know the incredible feats that we have accomplished. Some of us have produced albums, filmed documentaries, choreographed flash mobs. …

Senior Speech: Make Mistakes, Take Risks

The following is a graduation speech delivered by Needham High School senior Remy Marin during commencement ceremonies on Monday, June 6.

By Remy Marin, Class of 2011 I believe in making mistakes. I believe in throwing caution to the wind, in splattering paint outside the lines, in falling off every balance beam and in breaking my mother’s nicest china. OK. So maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I honestly do feel that errors are both a natural and a vital part of life—a fact which many people seem to forget nowadays. As the pressure to be the best at everything has swarmed our society, so has the mindset that perfection is necessary and error is intolerable. So many of us have spent our high school years trying to be perfect. We needed the flawless report card, stellar SAT scores and impressive extracurricular activities to feel accomplished, not to mention having …

Class of 2011 Graduates from Needham High School

Needham High School Class of 2011 told not to worry about perfection but to learn from mistakes during Monday night ceremony.

On a beautiful, sunny evening set aside to recognize the Needham High School seniors’ many accomplishments, their peers and educators had what might seem like a strange message for the Class of 2011: Go ahead and fail. In a speech delivered to a crowd of grads-to-be, family and friends on Memorial Field Monday night, graduating senior Remy Marin encouraged her classmates to take risks, challenge themselves and make mistakes. “So after four years of hard work, stress and determination trying to get to this day, to set up our futures to be what we always wanted them to be, I want everyone to go out and make every mistake possible,” Marin said. “This is our time to try new things, pursue exciting ideas and commit the errors that will allow us…
