By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Needham High School's fall sports programs continued to excel in a week that saw five teams stay undefeated and all teams move to at least .500 on the young season. Girls swimming and diving, girls soccer, boys and girls cross country and football all have yet to lose, while golf (two wins), girls volleyball (one win), boys soccer (one win) and field hockey (one win), each had strong weeks as well. The NHS cheerleaders and dance team were in action at the football team's 42-7 win over Braintree on Friday night, Sept. 21, with the dance team also being recognized for their 2012 State Championship at halftime. By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics The Needham High School boys hockey team will face St. John's High School (Shrewsbury) tonight in the Super 8 Tournament at Merrmack College. The game will start at 5:45 p.m., and the student fan bus will leave at 4:15 p.m. (Check with the high school office for details about attending.) Needham is seeded eighth, while St. John's is seeded ninth. Also in post-season action this week, the varsity boys basketball team will play Taunton High School in the Division 1 South Tournament on Thursday, March 1 at 7 p.m. The student fan bus will leave at 5:30 p.m. Needham is seeded 10th, while Taunton is seeded seventh. By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics On Wednesday, Feb. 1 and Thursday, Feb. 2, the Needham High School boys swimming and diving team took part in the Bay State Conference Championship Meet at Brookline High School. After winning the regular season league title by going undefeated against BSC opponents, the boys wrapped up the league season by winning the meet championship. Finishing with the program's largest margin of victory in the league meet, the team will head into sectionals on Sunday, Feb. 12 at MIT with high hopes. Football team is one win away from the postseason, boys soccer goes out in style and Duffy named IAFO Coach of the Year.
By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Although the Rockets boys soccer season ended on Friday, Nov. 11 at the hands of the No. 1 seed Greater New Bedford in the south section semifinals, the boys were as good as any other team in the area and showed it in the tournament. After taking down King Phillip at home in the first round 4-1, Needham then needed overtime to beat a very good Silver Lake team two days later, before once again going into overtime against Greater New Bedford—this time falling 3-2. Mac Steeves put the Rockets up 1-0 in the first half before the top seed scored one minute later to tie up the game.
