Rockets Fall Short in State Final

Fourth-quarter rally wasn't enough to unseat Duxbury Wednesday night.

Coming into its tilt with nationally ranked Duxbury, no one would have blamed the Needham boys lacrosse team for simply being happy to be there. The Rockets wanted more, and they almost got it. A furious fourth-quarter rally put the Rockets within striking distance of the Dragons, but the clock ran out before the comeback could be completed as Needham fell to Duxbury 10-8 last night in the Eastern Massachusetts Division 1 state title game at Harvard Stadium. “We did a lot of what people doubted we could do,” Needham coach David Wainwright said. “I think we’re pretty satisfied with the fact that we gave them a great game; we made them worry a little bit.” In the early going it was all Duxbury. The Dragons led 3-0 after a quarter and 7-3 …

Although short-lived, as the team dropped a league match to the Tigers of Newton North on Wednesday, April 25, it is a good indication of the talented of this spring's squad. Defeating Wellesley on Monday, April 23 and Norwood on Friday, April 27, the boys moved to 8-2 on the season and will face Natick, Braintree and Framingham this week. Boys Lacrosse While holding a Top 10 ranking in the region, the boys lacrosse team had one of their toughest stretches of the season this past week. Needham Tops Wellesley to Claim D1 South Title

The Rockets beat the Raiders, 5-0, on Friday.

Mark it a sweep in the sweetest of ways. The Needham boys tennis team went into the Div. 1 South Sectional final match against Wellesley having beating them twice in the regular season. The top-seeded Rockets brought out the broomsticks Friday defeating the sixth-seeded Raiders, 5-0, at Newton North High School and exacting revenge for last year’s final loss to the same foe. “I think, quite honestly, by the time the end of the season came most people thought we were the favorites,” Needham head coach Andrew Lawrence said. “So I kind of felt the pressure was on us to win. And I think that is a different type of pressure. We were expected to win. We beat them twice in the regular season.” He continued, “You know, it’s nice. There’s a big …

Stenberg Earns 100th Point of the Season

Needham boys lacrosse wallops Milton, 18-1.

Needham head coach Dave Wainwright asked his team to play smart, fundamental lacrosse against Weymouth and Foxborough, and while the Rockets did win both of those games, he wasn’t totally satisfied with his team’s effort. But against Milton on Tuesday, Needham played their best lacrosse of the season, as they beat up the Wildcats at Memorial Field, 18-1. “Yes [it was an all around effort],” Needham head coach Dave Wanwright said with a big smile. “This was the complete game I was looking for and for the first time, [my team after the game] was like, gee, thank you, coach.”  “[Needham] took care of the ball, made the right passes, they drew the slide and finished on all of their opportunities,” Milton head coach Ben Midura said. Needham …
