Between the High School and middle school, Needham kids netted more than 125 awards in the 2013 Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
Needham was certainly well-represented in this year's Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, with over 110 students bringing in awards this time around. At Needham High School, 39 students took home 49 awards, including 27 Gold Key Awards, 11 Silver Key Awards and 11 Honorable Mentions, according to a spreadsheet released on the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards website. Pollard Middle School 13 students took home a total of 13 awards, including one Gold Key Awards, six Silver Key Awards and eight Honorable Mentions. The board that advises the governor on his or her appointments has been a source of embarrassment, the Boston Globe writes in an editorial, and the board has little function.
A few days after the primary selected the candidates who will face off for the Governor's Council, the Boston Globe ran an editorial calling for the end of the board that advises the governor on selections for judgeships, parole board and other posts. The council predates the United States, having been set up by King Charles I of England. The editorial suggests that the Governor's Council no longer serves a necessary purpose and has had a negative effect, "... thanks to a few councilors whose clownish antics have been an embarrassment to the state ..." Zoning changes key in developing economic centers.
Needham isn't the only community along Route 128 looking to grow local revenue by growing its business base. The Boston Globe reports that Newton and Waltham are also working on plans to boost economic development in their towns, and nearby Dedham is "reaping millions in new tax revenue" thanks to the development of its Legacy Place shopping center, according to a recent article published on Boston.com. The Reagan appointed judge that approved it--well, I disagree because no one on the outside can demand this surgery.
