Rockets Review: Fall Seasons Underway

Needham High School teams each ended their first week of the season with at least one win.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Each of the Rockets teams in action last week came away with at least one win. Girls volleyball started off the Needham High School fall season on the road at Mansfield on Tuesday, Sept. 4 with a big 3-set win, while field hockey, and girls and boys soccer came away with quality league victories over Brookline on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Golf also started the season off on Wednesday, easily taking down Milton, before coming out on top of Brookline by only two strokes on Thursday, Sept. 6. On Friday, girls soccer was the only Needham squad to beat Wellesley (2-1), as boys soccer, girls volleyball and field hockey all lost close games. Here are several ways you can make sure your players are highlighted on Needham Patch.

Fall sports will soon be kicking into high gear, and Patch wants to help you share every exciting moment with the community. We are looking for athletes, coaches, parents, booster club members and fans who are ready, willing and able to share their team spirit on Patch. News about any team—high school, middle school, rec teams, etc.—is welcome! Here's how you can share news about your sports team: 1. Rockets Review: Boys Volleyball Ranked No. 1

Although only in the spot briefly, the local team was the first from Needham High School in recent years to earn the top position in the Boston Globe EMASS rankings.

  By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Last week, the Rockets boys volleyball team became the first Needham High School team in years to move into the No. 1 spot in the Boston Globe EMASS rankings. Although short-lived, as the team dropped a league match to the Tigers of Newton North on Wednesday, April 25, it is a good indication of the talented of this spring's squad. Defeating Wellesley on Monday, April 23 and Norwood on Friday, April 27, the boys moved to 8-2 on the season and will face Natick, Braintree and Framingham this week. Boys Lacrosse While holding a Top 10 ranking in the region, the boys lacrosse team had one of their toughest stretches of the season this past week. Rockets Review: Boys Swimming Takes BSC Title

A look at some of the highlights in Needham High School sports for the week of Jan. 23-29.

On Friday, Jan. 27, boys swimming and diving won (more below), the girls basketball avenged an earlier season loss to Brookline by beating the Warriors at home, while the boys basketball team, also avenging an earlier season loss, used a transition basket from senior captain Kevin Farley at the buzzer to take down the host Warriors 54-52.   Also on Friday, the Needham gymnastics team had a dominating performance at home, scoring a season high 133 points, to beat the visiting Wildcats of Weymouth.   On Saturday, Jan. 28, wrestling started the day off going 3-0 in a Bay State Conference quad meet, earning …

Rockets Review: Coach Freitas Earns Spot in Hall of Fame

A look at some of the highlights in high school sports from Jan. 17-22.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics After 37 years on the sidelines with the Needham High School baseball program, and more than 300 wins, head coach John Freitas will be recognized for his tremendous work and accomplishments when he is inducted into the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame at the organization's annual banquet on Saturday, Jan. 28. Other highlights in local sports: Wrestling Needham wrestling head coach Paul Ahern had the following to say about the Weymouth tournament on Saturday, Jan. 21: Competing against 15 other teams from 11 different schools, the NHS wrestling team captured the Weymouth Tournament title this past Saturday. Rockets Review: Big Wins Close 2011

Boys hockey stuns Catholic Memorial, girls basketball wins holiday tourney and dance team to perform at NCAA Orange Bowl halftime.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Boys Hockey On Wednesday, Dec. 21, the eighth-ranked Needham High School boys ice hockey team, in their home-opener at Babson College, beat Wellesley 6-2 in front of a large and vocal crowd. The win moved the Rockets to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Bay State Conference and set them up for their match-up with top-5 Catholic Memorial on Dec. 28. Needham out-skated the visitors for much of the first two periods and saw one of Catholic Memorial’s top players ejected for a hit against the boards, but the team was not able to find the back of the net. The Knights broke the 0-0 tie in the third period and looked to be in great position to take the win, when Needham pulled their goalie with just over …

Rockets Review: Sept. 26-Oct. 2

October begins with a bang for Needham teams.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics On Saturday, Oct. 1, two Needham High School varsity teams earned convincing victories in much different styles. Football (3-1, 3-0 BSC) took down BSC Carey Division rival and fifth-ranked Weymouth 45-28 on Memorial Field, while boys soccer (6-2-1, 5-2-1 BSC) welcomed Xaverian to DeFazio as part of the BSC/Catholic Conference Challenge and defeated the visitors 6-0 (with junior Mac Steeves scoring five goals). Each Needham team came into their games unranked, but came away from the weekend having cracked the Globe Top-20 (football at No. 16 and soccer at No. 19).
