Raising Needham: Talking 911 With Kids

Everyone hopes it will never happen, but preparing your children for an emergency is a smart move.

As a parent, we think of everything we can to protect our children. From before they are born, we ponder every decision in the hope that it is the right one. American parents have gotten a bad rap for their over-protectiveness, but, while I have seen it go to the extremes, I think all any parent wants is a safe, happy child. So we baby-proof, toddler-proof and 'tween-proof their lives hoping we don’t get to know the local ER too well. But I was thinking the other day as my mom came over to watch the kids that maybe they are ready to learn just what to do if all of my “proofing” doesn’t keep them from harm. Teaching kids about 911 is so important - especially if you have more than one running around. I have 3, my oldest being 12 and youngest just turned 4, so I have had the 911/emergency coversation several times and I hope I make it more and more clear each time.
