Needham Teens Pick Obama, Brown in Mock Election

The high schoolers voted unofficially on Monday, Nov. 5.

While some Needham High School students were eligible to vote in Tuesday's state election, many were not—but that didn't stop local teens from making their voices heard. On Monday, Nov. 5, the school's social studies department coordinated a mock election that included many of the races and issues addressed in the real election. A total of 651 NHS students voted in the mock election. School staff shared the results of that election on Wednesday morning: President U.S. Senate Representative in Congress Question 1: Right to Repair Question 2: Assisted Suicide Question 3: Medical Marijuana Package Store Licenses in Needham Needham High School students also had a presence at polls around town on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Great that the kids had an opportunity to research the issues and then vote on them. Thanks also to the students who helped out at the polls. With so many voters, the lines were long and those students helped to find everyone on the list. I do have an issue however with your choice of wording on question 2. Whether you support the issue or not, assisted suicide is inflammatory wording, I believe …   more ›

Needham Passes Alcohol Question, Votes Blue

The town followed the rest of Massachusetts in re-electing President Barack Obama and electing Elizabeth Warren as Senator and Joe Kennedy as Congressman.

Needham residents soon will be able to buy their wine right here in town. By an overwhelming margin, local voters approved the only question on the Nov. 6 special town election ballot—whether Needham should issue licenses to businesses to sell wine, beer and liquor in town. In the end, 12,181 Needham residents voted yes on the measure, while 4,636 residents voted no. With approval of the ballot question, Needham has the ability to issue up to six licenses for the retail sale of beer, wine and liquor in town, with two additional wine and beer licenses available after 2018, for a total of eight. Needham selectmen will be holding a public hearing later this month to consider regulations for alcohol sales licenses, and each license applicant…

Needham Struggles with Ballot Box Breakdowns

The different-sized special town and state ballots appear to be jamming in some of the machines, delaying the process at some precincts.

Needham's two ballots appear to be causing some problems with ballot boxes at some of the town's precincts. By 2 p.m. on Election Day, at least three ballot machines had malfunctioned, Town Clerk Tedi Eaton said. “We’ve had a lot of problems. Precinct H was down—we got that up and running. A had a problem—we got that up and running. G, I’m waiting for them to come from my vendor with another machine, so that one’s down,” she said.  Eaton said part of the problem appeared to be the fact that two different sized ballots were being fed into the machines. The ballot for Needham's special election is the size of a regular piece of computer paper, while the state ballot is much longer. “One’s this size and one’s this size, and people are trying …

Parenting: Voting with the Kids

Election Day is a great opportunity to teach your kids about the importance of the voting process.

I would love to rename Election Day "Freedom Day." I think more people would vote if they could remember or in some cases even know what it took and what we lost in order to secure our democracy. I guess you can tell by my tone that I have always been fascinated by politics. Yes, it can get ugly—especially in a presidential race—but cut through all of that nonsense and you get to the core of what Election Day is really about: our freedom to decide who runs our country. My gather was born in Germany and never ever took his right to vote in the United States for granted. He was incredibly proud to be an American citizen and passionate about his right to vote. We all learned at a very young age what a privilege it is to vote. I went to the …

I would also encourage you to educate your children about all the other offices that are on the ballot, as well as the other elections that occur during the year. When my children were young and I brought them to the polls, I also brought them when I voted in the Town Election in April and explained the importance of that election.   more ›

Baked Beans or Clam Chowder? Needham Second Graders Vote in Mock Election

St. Joseph Elementary School students learned about the election process by helping to pick Massachusetts' state dish.

Second graders at St. Joseph Elementary School got a taste of the voting process on Monday, Nov. 5, as they cast their ballots in a race they could really sink their teeth into: Baked Beans vs. Clam Chowder. As their classmates waved campaign signs and shouted words of support for their respective candidates, the students headed down the hallway to the polls Monday morning to write down their choice for which food should become the Massachusetts State Dish. In the end, the winner by a slim margin was New England Clam Chowder. “As part of the social studies curriculum, we’ve been learning about what it means to be an American citizen. The children have been learning about elections and voting and national and state symbols,” said Kaitlin …

Right to Repair: What Does Your Vote Mean?

Find out what your vote on Question 1 will mean.

On Nov. 6, Massachusetts voters will be asked to vote on three questions along with the state and federal political races. Question 1, also known as Right to Repair, is asking voters whether all vehicle owners should have access to repair manuals and diagnostic information for their vehicles. "This proposed law would prohibit any motor vehicle manufacturer, starting with model year 2015, from selling or leasing, either directly or through a dealer, a new motor vehicle without allowing the owner to have access to the same diagnostic and repair information made available to the manufacturer’s dealers and in-state authorized repair facilities," the Massachusetts Secretary of State's website says. According to the website, a "yes" vote on …

Assisted Suicide: What Does Your Vote Mean?

Find out what your vote on Question 2 will mean.

On Nov. 6, Massachusetts voters will be asked to vote on three questions along with the state and federal political races. Question 2 asks whether doctors should be allowed to prescribe medication to end life. "This proposed law would allow a physician licensed in Massachusetts to prescribe medication, at a terminally ill patient’s request, to end that patient’s life," the Massachusetts Secretary of State's website says. According to the website a "yes" vote would allow for the prescription of life-ending medication. A "no" vote would make no change to the current law and keep the practice illegal.

Medical Marijuana: What Does Your Vote Mean?

Find out what a yes or no vote on Question 3 will mean.

On Nov. 6, Massachusetts voters will be asked to vote on three questions along with the state and federal political races. Question 3 is regarding the legalization of medical marijuana. "This proposed law would eliminate state criminal and civil penalties for the medical use of marijuana by qualifying patients. To qualify, a patient must have been diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition," the  Massachusetts Secretary of State's website says. According to the website, a "yes" vote would allow for patients to smoke marijuana if it is prescribed by a doctor. A "no" vote would make no change to the current law and keep the practice illegal.

Question 3 is a "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" warn citizens in California and Colorado where pot stores have proliferated under a law similar to the one proposed here. The language in this 6-page law includes "other conditions" which allows virtually anyone to get a marijuana recommendation for any reason. There can be 35 pot stores in the first year, but there is no upper limit in the law. This is …   more ›
