Needham Girls Lacrosse Takes on Undefeated Westford

Westford Academy takes on Needham at their home turf.

Via the Needham Channel. The Needham Rockets lead the first half of their girls lacrosse game on May 20 with ascore of 6-2, thanks to five early unanswered goals. Needham High School hosted the undefeated team from Westford, and hoped to hand them their first defeat.  With some offensive firepower from to Maddy Stenberg's and some aggressive offense from goalie Annee O'Connor, the Rockets ultimately won with a final count of 13-5.

Natick Redhawks Face Needham Rockets Volleyball

Senior Night game puts the Boys Volleyball team as Bay sTate Conference Champs.

From the Needham Channel: The Needham Boys Volleyball team took on the Natick Redhawks on Senior Night on May 17, 2013 at Needham High School. Led by Sr. Sam Tillotson's 16 kills the Rockets won 3-1 (25-8, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21) to finish as Bay State Conference Champions with a 15-1 Conference Record (17-3 Overall). Will Aly Raisman Win the Mirror Ball Tonight in Dancing with the Stars Final?

Viewer votes now play a big role now in who wins the DWTS mirror ball trophy.

  Aly Raisman won an Olympic gold medal for her gymnastics; will she be able to win that Dancing with the Stars mirror ball for her dancing? Aly and her dance partner Mark Ballas made it this far, to the season finale to Season 16 of Dancing with the Stars. They made it to to the final four. But that DWTS mirrorball could turn out to be out of reach without support from you, Aly's Needham-Newton-Burlington community and her other fans. The final four dancing teams — Aly and Mark, Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff, Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough and Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy — performed three times Monday night, including a cha-cha relay. Rockets Review: Boys Lacrosse Takes on State Champs, Seedings and More

A quick look at Needham High School sports action over the past week, including lacrosse, volleyball and tennis.

  On Monday, Boys Lacrosse traveled to State #1 and defending State Champion, Duxbury, to take on the mighty Dragons, a team that had not lost an in-State game in its last 48 tries. The Rockets got some pay-back for last spring's State Championship loss, and brought home a thrilling 6-4 upset win!  Below is the story the Boston Herald posted about the game along with video footage of the contest: See the Boston Herald article and a game highlight video here. Needham then beat top-15 Newton North and Dedham to complete a BSC sweep, finishing 11-0 in league and as the overall champion. Needham Rockets Takes On Top-Ranked Duxbury Dragons

Highlights from the Needham Rockets game with the Duxbury Dragons earlier this week.

  In last year's D1 State Lacrosse Championship, the Dragons took on the Rockets. May 13, the Needham High faced their State Champ rivals again. Duxbury got a quick lead, 3-0 in the first half of the game. But ultimately the Rockets came back to take the Dragons down in a 6-4 game.  From the Needham Channel: Duxbury got out to a quick 3-0 lead thanks to 2 goals from Jay Walsh. Mike Panepinto would score for Needham to cut the lead as Needham would trail Duxbury 3-1 at the half. In the 2nd half Nico Panepinto would score 3 straight goals to give Needham a 4-3 lead. Rockets Review: 400 Career Points for Girls Lacrosse Star, Top-10 Unbeaten and More

  On Monday, #4 Needham Girls Lacrosse traveled to State #1 Westwood and gave the home squad everything they could handle, coming up just short in a thrilling 10-9 loss.   In the game, Senior Captain Maddie Stenberg broke the 400 total career point mark!  Below is a write up from head coach Beth O'Brien: This week marked an exciting week for Needham Girl's Lacrosse with a hard fought battle against #1 Westwood and an important milestone being reached.  Needham went shot for shot and battle for battle, but came up short losing to Westwood 10-9, with final goal being scored with only 75 seconds left in the game.  Needham came back from two down to tie the score 9-9 late in the game, behind two outstanding goals by junior, Kira Oberle.  …

Aly Raisman Preview: Dancing with the Stars Semifinals Begin Tonight

Two weeks left of Aly & Mark and four other celebrity-professional dancing couples vying to win the DWTS prize.

  Dancing pairs have gotten picked off — by Dancing with the Stars judges and by viewership votes — for eight weeks. Now, let the semifinals begin! When last we saw Needham-based Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman and her dancing partner, Mark Ballas, on last Tuesday's Results Show, they were one of five pairs who survived until Monday night's semifinals. The full list: DWTS viewers voted Afro Jazz as the dance Aly & Mark will tackle tonight for the semifinals. One more couple gets cut by the end of the results show Tuesday night. Dancing with the Stars airs tonight at 8 p.m., with the Results how Tuesday at 9 p.m.

Needham Girls' Lax Team Battles Westwood, Game Decided in Final Minutes

Westwood broke a 9-9 tie in the waning minutes to beat Needham on May 6.

The following information was provided by Michael Dermody at the Needham Channel: The Needham Rockets girls' lacrosse team took on the Westwood Wolverines in their annual premiere matchup at Westwood High School on Monday, May 6. After Westwood got out to an early 2-0 lead, Needham took a 7-5 lead into the half thanks to three goals from Catherine Conley. In the second half, Westwood jumped out again, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 9-7 lead. Kira Oberle stepped up and scored two huge goals for Needham in the last six minutes to tie the game at 9-9. Then with 1:16 left in the game, Kim Egizi scored the eventual game winner to give Westwood the 10-9 victory over Needham. An incredible game between two great teams who I am sure will …
