Images of Needham's Agricultural Past Shared on Farmers Market Site

Prints made from original glass plate negatives show an old grain elevator and other buildings that once made up Needham Center.

The latest gallery containing old photographs from Needham's past was posted Monday on the Needham Farmers Market website, needhamfarmersmarket.org. The images posted on the site provide a look back at Needham's agricultural roots and are being shared with the community as a lead up to the grand opening of the town's new farmers market on June 10. These latest prints come from original glass plate negatives made possible by Jamie Turbayne. Describing the photo gallery, webmaster Tom Gehman said: "In the 19th century, Needham was largely a farming community. Needham's businesses and town offices were clustered around the center where the Needham Farmers Market will be opening June 10 [at First Parish]. Standing on the corner of Dedham …

Gardening: The Basics of Herb Planting

Herbs provide both flavor and aroma to the garden and the kitchen.

Herbs can add so much depth to a dish, but those bunches from the grocery store never seem to last long and though not expensive individually, those figures do add up. Wouldn't it be great this summer to read a recipe, note the ingredients, and head out to the garden to freshly snip those flavorful elements? Herb gardening can be a resourceful tool for the kitchen as well as a lovely enhancement to any vegetable or flowering garden. A surprising fact about herbs is that they can be planted as perennials or annuals. With that in mind, don’t plant perennial herbs in the middle of a vegetable garden. Place them in a protected space or bed near the house. For annual herbs, they benefit from the rich soils and sun provided with vegetable …

Rockets Review: Boys Tennis Takes South Titles

Girls lacrosse stays on top as Needham teams' regular seasons wind down.

By Micah Hauben, NHS Director of Athletics Needham singles players Aaron Revzin and Aaron Segel rolled through the Division I South Section as the No. 1 and 2 seeds respectively only to face each other in the title match on Sunday, May 20. While it is a great accomplishment for any school to fill both spots in the final match, it did mean one Needham High School athlete would not be moving on after Sunday's play. Revzin showed why he has been the Rockets' No. 1, taking down Segel 6-2 and 6-4. On the doubles side, the Needham duo of Mitchell Silverman and Ben Okonow lived up to their top seeding, also rolling to the South Section final, where they defeated Sharon's top group, 6-4 and 6-3. Revzin, Silverman and Okonow now advance to the …

A Trifle Fit For a Queen

Looking to make a crowd pleasing dessert for your next gathering? Look no further. This easy to make trifle is sure to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth.

"It would be spiteful to put a Jellyfish in a trifle." ~Karl Pilkington I love my trifle bowl but don't often get to use it, so I typically offer to make a dessert when invited to a party. So when Mother's Day rolled around last weekend I knew I would have to make a trifle. The trifle I make is some combination of cake, chocolate, crushed candy bar and whipped cream but I wanted to try something a little different. I stumbled upon a recipe that used the standard cake and candy but to add a new note of flavor instant coffee was added to the mix. The grocery store had hazelnut instant coffee on sale so I chose that instead of regular, substitued vanilla pudding for chocolate and in lieu of yellow cake I bought pound cake. I'm sure my trifle …

Pet of the Week

Pet of the Week: Mutt and Jeff

Pair of tabby cats are available for adoption through the Neponset Valley Humane Society.

Submitted by Judy Ambrose, Neponset Valley Humane Society Mutt and Jeff are three-year-old very adorable and friendly orange tabby cats.  These nice boys need a new home because their senior owners must move into an assisted living facility that does not allow cats. Mutt and Jeff are very devoted to each other and need to find a forever home together. They have been loved and well cared for since they were babies. They have always been strictly indoor cats. They love to run and play and wrestle with each other. The favorite thing for both boys is to be snuggled in a lap.  Mutt and Jeff are trained to sleep in their crate at night. They get their treats and know it's bed time. They like their crate and even sometimes sleep in it during the …
