Aly Raisman Named Olympic Team Captain

The Needham teen was honored with a leadership role on the U.S. women's gymnastics team on Thursday, July 26.

Needham gymnast Aly Raisman has been named captain of the U.S. Women's Olympic Gymnastics Team, according to a Facebook announcement posted Thursday, July 26 around 5:20 p.m.

"Congratulations to Aly Raisman, who was named captain of the U.S. Women's Olympic Gymnastics Team!" the Facebook post stated. Twenty minutes after it was posted, the status had nearly 500 likes.

USA Gymastics has not made the official announcement on the team website yet. However, Raisman discussed her new role in a video interview posted on another website, gymnastlike.org.

In the interview, Raisman said that the decision was voted on by the other athletes.

"I was named team captain, so that's a huge honor for me," Raisman said in the video on gymnastlike.org. "I'm so excited, and I can't wait to be able to compete and share this experience with these girls. They're like my best friends, and we have so much fun together when we're at the gym and when we're not at the gym. It's really great that we have such a great bond, and I always just try to be there for them and to help them out if they ever need anything."

Raisman said her whole family had traveled to London to watch her compete, including an aunt, uncle and grandmother.

Raisman is set on Sunday, July 29.
