Rockets Review: The Fall Season Starts!

Boys and Girls Soccer and Field Hockey Start Season with Wins over Wellesley!

The following was submitted by the Needham High School Athletics Department

Many of the Rockets fall teams got their seasons underway this past week.  Field Hockey and Girls Volleyball got fall varsity contests going with a trip to Wellesleyon Tuesday.

Field Hockey earned Needham's first victory of the year, taking down the host Raiders 4-0 behind 2 goals from Senior Captain Lexi Quirk (#16 below).

While Girls Volleyball did not come away with a win, they battled to the end, taking the home team to 25-23 and 26-24 in the final two sets.

On Saturday, Girls Soccer traveled to Wellesley and brought home a tough 2-1 victory, while the defending D1 State Champion Boys hosted the Raiders in the annual 300th Cup Soccer Game (hosted each year by the Needham Soccer Club) on Memorial Field and used 2 direct kick goals from Junior Captain Aram Ouligian(header below) to take the big 2-1 win!

The win for the Boys was not only pay back for their only loss last season (to Wellesley) but allowed Needham to retain the 300th Cup Trophy for the third year in a row.

Who's Ready for some Football?

Saturday night saw the Varsity Football Team travel to Westwood for the first time ever to take on the host Wolverines in a non-league contest. Due to the new state football playoff format, the only league games set each year will be the 5 BSC Carey Division contests, so Needham added Westwood and Walpole (non-league) for their early-season games.

After a slow start on both 'O' and 'D' (down 18-0 to start game), the Rockets raised their intensity level and got two scores on long runs from Senior Captain Mikey Panepinto to cut halftime deficit to 24-14.

Turnovers plagued Needham, leading to Westwood's fourth score and a 30-14 lead, but with Panepinto sidelined due to leg cramping, Senior Captain QB Ryan Charter stepped up and threw two long bomb TDs to Senior WR Mike Elcock.  A couple of failed 2-point conversion and one more Westwood score put the game out of reach, as Needham dropped their season opener 36-26.

The Rockets home-opener will be in two weeks, as they welcome in powerhouse Walpole for a 7:00pm start on Friday, September 20th at Memorial Field.
