Rockets Review: Wrestling Recap, Boys Ice Hockey Family Day, Parent Conferences
A quick look at Needham High School sports action over the past week.
The following was sent to Patch by Amy Goldstein:
NHS Wrestling went 2-2 on the week, facing some of the top competition in the Bay State League and state. On Wednesday night, The Rockets dropped a close one to undefeated Bay State League rival, Braintree, 48-34.
In the loss, Needham saw some great performances from Freshman Lucas Goldman, Senior Captains Mark Carroll and Mikhail Khibkin, Junior Zach Goldman, Seniors Islam Baiev and John Cronin, all earning pins or technical falls for the team.

"Our guys beat some of their best guys," Said Coach Paul Ahern, "But in the end, we lost those toss-up matches."
On Saturday, NHS Wrestling traveled to Winchester where they battled the home team, Xaverian and Billerica. Facing Winchester first, they fell to the #2 ranked team in the state, 52-19. But in the loss, the Rockets got four big wins from Carroll, Baiev, Sophomore Dan Goldstein and Cronin.

Cronin knocked off a highly ranked Sachem in dominating fashion, pinning his opponent after surging to an 11-0 lead. Needham went on to down Xaverian, 57-21 and in that win, ten Rockets left the mat with their hand raised: Lucas Goldman, Carroll, Junior Zach Goldman, Khibkin, Baiev, Senior Tak Hirayama, Junior Ben Glickman, Cronin, Senior Chris Ptak and Sophomore Will Burke tallied big victories.
Closing out the day, the Rockets avenged last year's loss to Merrimack Valley rival, Billerica, defeating them 54-21. Carroll, Zach Goldman, Khibkin, Senior Brett Cohen, Baiev, Hirayama, First-year Senior Andrew Wise and Cronin all earned pins for the Rockets.
Moving to 5-3 overall, and 1-1 in the BSL, the Rockets hold a #21 ranking in the state and look forward to taking part in the prestigious Lowell Holiday Tournament at the Tsongas Arena on Thursday and Friday of the vacation week.
