Rockets Review: Undefeated Gymnasts and Soccer at the State House
A quick look at Needham High School sports action over the past week, as submitted by the Needham High Athletics Dept.
Gymnastics Undefeated!
The Needham gymnasts moved to 4-0 on the season with their big BSC Carey win over Newton North on Friday. With the 133.25-131.10 win, the team finds itself with an outside chance to qualify for the State Team competition, while Senior Maria Smirnov and Junior Maggie Nieto turned in strong individual performances to help propel the Rockets.
Boys Swim & Dive Wins 2!
Boys Swim and Dive used two wins on the week to move to 4-3 on the season, with victories over Natick, 94-81, on Friday, and Newton North, 95-91, on Monday.
Indoor Track Records Fall!
While the Indoor Track Teams were not able to take down the mighty Tigers of Newton North in dual-meets on Thursday, they did test the perennial State power in both the Boys and Girls competitions.

On Saturday, at the annual MSTCA Relays, two NHS records fell, as the Boys Distance Medley Relay, consisting of Dan Alpert, Adrien Amaya, Tyler Hagen and Jack Strollo, took 1st Place in record time of 10:41, and the Girls 4x800 Relay took 3rd Place in record time of 9:48. Boys Soccer to State House!
The State Champion Needham Boys Soccer Team will be honored at the Mass. State House this week, as they have been invited by Representative Denise Garlick to be recognized by Senator Ross and Senator Rush at the 1:00pm session in Boston on Wednesday, January 23rd.

Wrapping Up: Commendations and Congratulations
Head Coach Don Brock also continued to rack up awards for the fall season, as he was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) / Adidas Regional Coach-of-the-Year and received a,
"Letter of Commendation by the NSCAA Awards Committee in recognition of (his) outstanding coaching career, including nearly 700 career victories and the occasion of (his) fourth state championship this past season. The award (was) presented (to Coach Brock) with four other individuals on stage at the annual Awards Banquet on Friday, January 18, 2013, in conjunction with the 66th annual NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis."
As the a Regional COY winner, Coach Brock also becomes a nominee, along with 7 other regional COYs, for National Coach-of-the-Year! Also at the NSCAA Convention, the Needham Boys Team was recognized as one of the top-25 high school teams in the country!
Wrestling took down Norwood on Wednesday, 58-21, and Boys and Girls Ice Hockey also each earned one win, with the Boys pulling away from Brookline 6-3 on Saturday, behind a hat-trick from Sophomore forward Danny Jacobs, and the Girls beating Dedham on Monday behind two goals from Sophomore Mikayla Michals. The Boys and Girls Basketball teams came away with important BSC wins as well, with each team, the Girls at home and the Boys on the road, beating Walpole on Friday.
