Rockets Review: Sept. 26-Oct. 2

October begins with a bang for Needham teams.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, two varsity teams earned convincing victories in much different styles. Football (3-1, 3-0 BSC) took down BSC Carey Division rival and fifth-ranked Weymouth 45-28 on , while boys soccer (6-2-1, 5-2-1 BSC) welcomed Xaverian to as part of the BSC/Catholic Conference Challenge and defeated the visitors 6-0 (with junior Mac Steeves scoring five goals). Each Needham team came into their games unranked, but came away from the weekend having cracked the Globe Top-20 (football at No. 16 and soccer at No. 19).

Heading into Saturday, the football game against Weymouth was tabbed as one of the 10 to watch, and coming out of the weekend, the result and story were lead material for the Boston Globe and Boston Herald high school sports pages. Several Rockets had great performances on offense and defense, including seniors Ian Riley, Dan Pierce and .

Boys soccer will host Walpole on Tuesday night, Oct. 4 under the lights of Memorial Field at 7:15 p.m. and then travel to No. 11 Brookline on Thursday, Oct. 6. Football will travel to Northeastern's Parsons Field on Sunday, Oct. 9 to take on Brookline for a 1:00 p.m. game, before hosting three 7:00 p.m. Friday night BSC games in a row on Memorial Field: Oct. 14 vs. Milton, Oct. 21 vs. No. 13 Walpole and Oct. 28 vs. Natick.

Girls Swimming and Diving

Girls swimming and diving (4-1, 4-0 BSC) also continued their recent success over league rival Framingham, traveling to Keefe Tech on Tuesday, Sept. 27 to take on the Flyers and coming away with a 104-81 win. The girls competed in the AB/Framingham invite at the Atkinson Pool in Sudbury on Sunday, Oct. 2 and will travel to take on Norwood (at Westwood High School) on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 3:45 p.m.
